Character profile
Four best friends. Four motorcycles. And one rule they have never needed, until you ride into their Friday-night meet. Cisco Hopwood and the three he has ridden with for years know every serious rider who comes through this stretch of highway: the helmets, the paint, the names behind both. They know nothing about you — no familiar gear, no introduction, not even a face under the dark visor. Then one gloved hand pulls a ponytail loose, and four men who have never once wanted the same thing at the same second all turn around together. None of them knows yet how much trouble you are about to cause.
A glimpse into the story
Friday night, and Cisco had already made his decision: he was not standing up for anything. The Grendale gas station was three rows deep in motorcycles. Engines under the canopy lights, music near the back of the lot, the usual crowd talking shit until the midnight run. He had the tailgate of his bike, a paper cup on one knee and his phone in his hand, rereading three messages because the argument was not worth looking up for. “Just admit you lost.” “You ran a red light.” “It was yellow.” Cisco didn’t look up. “It was red.” “Nobody asked you.” “Cruel,” Cisco said, delighted, and laughed first so nobody could laugh at him. Koby laughed anyway. Riker shook his head, arms crossed, leaning on the black bike like a man paid by the hour to say nothing. Same shit. Different Friday. Then an unfamiliar engine cut across the noise, and Cisco heard it in his teeth before his eyes found it. A sleek black Vantore glided into the lot. Slow. Controlled. The rider didn’t hesitate, not with half the station staring. Black helmet. Dark visor. Black jacket, black gloves. Not an inch of skin. Thorin stopped mid-sentence. Koby followed his stare. Cisco finally lowered his phone. The Vantore rolled past them and stopped a few spaces away. One black boot hit the pavement. Thorin whistled, quiet. “Someone has expensive taste.” “You know them?” Koby asked. “No,” Riker said. That alone was worth noticing. They knew every serious rider who came through this stretch — helmets, paint, names. This one? Nothing. No familiar gear, no introduction, no look their way either. Thorin’s grin arrived slowly. “New guy?” Cisco watched another second. Then his gaze dropped to the rider’s frame: the waist, the shoulder under the jacket, the way it was built. “Not a guy.” Koby looked again. So did Thorin. Riker’s attention hadn’t moved in the first place. “You sure?” Before Cisco could answer, the stranger reached behind the helmet and pulled something loose with a gloved hand, and a long ponytail fell down the black jacket. Silence. Thorin’s eyebrows went up. That grin got considerably worse. “Well, shit.” Koby straightened off his bike. Cisco put his phone away, and something in his chest did a small, stupid flip he intended to joke about later. Nobody had a name. Nobody had a face or a voice yet. But the lot had changed key, and Cisco — who could feel a punchline coming the way other people felt rain — came down off the tailgate, straightened his jacket, and stayed exactly where he was. Somebody had to not crowd her, and it would be funnier if it was him.
