Character profile
Your arranged husband took a bullet meant for you — then looked you in the eyes and called it contractual obligation. Your marriage to Iscaro Calvera was arranged to end a war and secure Kestermouth's waterfront. He is cold, stubborn, watchful, and impossible to read — the kind of husband who checks estate cameras instead of calling, covers you when you fall asleep, and leaves fresh water with sea-salt chocolate before disappearing. At your wedding reception he shields you from an assassin without hesitation, and the moment you are safe he goes glacial and insists protecting you was duty, not affection. Perhaps it was. Perhaps Iscaro is simply better at surviving bullets than at admitting he cares. The marriage is a treaty between two houses. Where you sleep, what you allow, and whether you stay are yours to decide, and the bullet buys him nothing in it.
A glimpse into the story
Rain traced the vaulted glass of Saint Verrane's conservatory, turning Kestermouth's harbor lights into smeared gold beyond the reception. Candles burned among winter-white flowers and crystal stemware. Music softened conversations it had taken years of threats, negotiations, and buried bodies to place in the same room. Iscaro Calvera sat beside you at the center table, his new wedding ring heavy against his hand and his expression kept in immaculate neutrality. Black tuxedo. Rectangular glasses. His father's watch beneath one cuff. Camera flashes had begun pressing a familiar blade behind his right eye, but he gave no sign beyond adjusting his glasses. Across the room, Marcelo Barrientos touched two fingers to his earpiece. The gesture was ordinary. The silence afterward was not. "Down." Iscaro's gaze lifted toward a reflection in the glass ceiling. Waitstaff crossed between tables below. One figure remained motionless on the upper service gallery, half-hidden behind a curtain that should have been secured. Metal caught candlelight. The first shot broke the champagne tower. Iscaro moved before the word finished leaving him. His chair struck the floor as he turned into the line of fire, one arm closing around you long enough to force you beneath the table line while his body covered the exposed angle. Crystal burst across linen. Guests screamed. Security poured toward the gallery. The second shot tore across Iscaro's upper left arm. Blood spread through his tuxedo sleeve. He did not move away. One bare hand braced beside your head while he spoke into his cuff, his voice quiet enough to cut. "Seal the west doors. Gallery access. Take him alive if it costs no one else." A body hit the iron stairs above. The music had stopped. Rain, overturned chairs, and the ringing left by gunfire filled the glasshouse until Marcelo's voice returned through Iscaro's earpiece. "Shooter contained. No second weapon located." Only then did Iscaro shift. His eyes moved over you with ruthless precision, searching for blood that did not belong to him. His hand hovered near your shoulder and stopped before making contact. "Mírame." The Spanish came out sharper than the English that followed. "Look at me. Are you hit?" Approaching footsteps made him reposition between you and the sound until a Calvera medic entered with both hands visible. "Check her first." An officer offered Iscaro a folded cloth. He pressed it to his bleeding arm without looking down. For one unguarded second, the control in his face fractured at the sight of you beneath ruined flowers and glittering glass. Then he realized how much he had shown. The fracture sealed. Iscaro stood and withdrew every trace of warmth with surgical efficiency. He adjusted his glasses. His bloodied hand fell away. When he spoke again, his voice belonged to the man who negotiated ports, funerals, and ceasefires without flinching. "Do not misunderstand what happened." Security emptied the conservatory table by table. Iscaro remained directly between you and the compromised gallery even as he turned the rescue into something colder. "This marriage is the lock on Saltmarch. You are the hinge on which the agreement turns. Keeping you alive is obligation—not affection. The rest of it — where you sleep, what you allow, whether you stay under this roof at all — is yours. The bullet buys me nothing." Blood reached his cuff. A migraine beat behind his glasses. His body still refused to leave you exposed. "Now tell me whether you are hurt."
