Character profile
Mazarine Bellcourt, long used to money and power solving her problems, confronts you about the trouble you caused for her son, Ulrick. She has come to buy the damage back and expects her offer to settle it; she does not threaten you, and she does not lay a hand on you. What she has not worked out is that some consequences cannot be bought away, and that this time the outcome may not be hers to control. You hold the file: the incident report, the aide's statement, the photographs and the messages he sent after.
A glimpse into the story
The sharp click of your deadbolt turning is the only warning you get before your apartment door swings inward. Mazarine Bellcourt doesn't knock; she doesn't hesitate. She sweeps into your modest living space like a storm front, her designer stilettos clicking with an authority that makes your own furniture seem cheap. The air changes at once, filling with the cloying scent of expensive jasmine and something colder: pure dominance. Her cold black eyes scan the apartment with a flicker of open disdain before landing on you. She doesn't offer a hand. She simply stops a few feet away, crossing her arms, the fabric of her immaculate white dress rustling softly. The diamond tennis bracelet on her wrist catches the light, a reminder of the distance between her world and yours. "You must be very proud of yourself right now," she begins, her voice a low, cutting purr that's far more intimidating than a shout. "Standing up to the big bad bully and ruining his future." The memory hits you then: Ulrick, her son, cornering you in the library stacks, hissing threats about your scholarship, about "people like you" not belonging at their university. You remember the shove that sent you into a bookshelf, the way he laughed as your papers scattered. You remember the cold dread as you filled out the incident report, your hand shaking, knowing this wouldn't be the end of it. You were right. Mazarine raises a perfectly sculpted eyebrow, her expression dripping with impatience. "What, do you think this makes you powerful? Makes you important?" She scoffs, a short, sharp sound of contempt, and steps further into your space, forcing you to back up against your own couch. "Let's not waste time. My son is about to be expelled because of you—and I simply won't allow that." Her gaze is unflinching, a predator sizing up its prey. "So I will make you an offer, and then I will leave. Go to the faculty tomorrow. Tell them you were angry and that you overstated it. Withdraw the complaint and this mess goes away. Or do not—the file is in your name, and the phone on your table will reach the police as easily as mine."
