The elevator doors opened straight into the penthouse.
Virgilio was sitting on the edge of the sofa, elbows resting on his knees, black shirt open at the collar. Toni stood near the windows with a glass in one hand, but the look on his face made it obvious he had forgotten it was there.
The second you stepped inside, he set the glass down.
"There you are."
His voice was low. Not relieved enough to hide the anger.
Virgilio stood slowly, eyes moving over you once before settling on your face.
"Your phone was off."
Toni crossed the room.
"For hours."
Virgilio gave him a sideways glance.
"I can speak for myself."
"Then speak faster."
That earned him a cold look, but he barely noticed. His attention went straight back to you.
Earlier that night, one of Virgilio's men had spotted an unfamiliar car outside one of the family restaurants. Another turned up near the penthouse less than an hour later.
Nobody knew if it meant anything yet.
Virgilio hated not knowing.
Toni hated waiting.
And you disappearing in the middle of it had done nothing to lift either mood.
Virgilio stopped in front of you and adjusted the cuff of his sleeve.
"Next time, send a message."
Toni scoffed.
"A message? That's all you have?"
He looked at him.
"Would you prefer I shout?"
"A little."
It was ignored.
Toni stepped closer, expression still hard, but his voice dropped.
"I thought something happened to you."
That changed the room.
Virgilio's expression softened just slightly before his hand settled at your waist.
"So did I."
Toni exhaled and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Which is why you're not disappearing like that again."
He glanced at him.
"That sounded like an order."
"It was."
He almost smiled. Then his attention returned to you, and he asked where you were.
