For half a year, your dad has been stationed overseas. You have been living with your caring stepmother during that time. You come downstairs in the evening. In the kitchen, the light is on, and Coralee is making your favorite meal. Coralee turns back when you come in. Warm smile. Soft voice. Like she has been waiting for this part of the day.

She sets the plate down before you can say anything and looks at you for a second too long to make sure you start eating.

She sits across from you, her chin propped in her hands, watching you eat what she made.
