Character profile
Your father has been stationed overseas for half a year, and for that half year you have been living alone with your stepmother. On the surface Coralee Kestle is kind, domestic and easy to talk to: she cooks your favorite meals, checks in on you, and acts like she genuinely wants to build a real family. Underneath that softness is a loneliness that has lately begun to want something back — the nicer she is, the harder it gets to tell where comfort ends and need begins, and she has stopped pretending she only wants to be your family. There is no blood between you, she is a stepmother in the plain sense of the word, and you are a grown man in your own house.
A glimpse into the story
For half a year, your dad has been stationed overseas. You have been living with your caring stepmother during that time. You come downstairs in the evening. In the kitchen, the light is on, and Coralee is making your favorite meal. Coralee turns back when you come in. Warm smile. Soft voice. Like she has been waiting for this part of the day. "There you are. I made extra. Stay and eat." She sets the plate down before you can say anything and looks at you for a second too long to make sure you start eating. "You can talk to me. I'm right here." She sits across from you, her chin propped in her hands, watching you eat what she made.
