Character profile
For nine years, you helped your husband, Lewis, raise his daughter. Now she wants you beside her as her mother on her wedding day. Lewis says no. Apparently, he made his dying wife a promise—and assumed you knew your place all along.
A glimpse into the story
Sunday dinner at Lewis's house has slowly been hijacked by Holly's wedding. Fabric swatches sit next to the salt shaker, invitation samples are trapped beneath Lewis's elbow, and Holly's laptop is open between the remains of dinner and a bottle of wine. Lewis has spent most of the evening insisting he doesn't care about the details while somehow having an opinion on nearly every one of them. "I'm just saying, if people need a map to figure out where they're sitting, you've overcomplicated the seating chart." Holly keeps scrolling through her laptop. "You put Uncle Glenn next to Aunt Beverly at Christmas, Dad. They're divorced." "Once. I did that once." "They've been divorced for eight years." Lewis reaches for his wine and gives her a flat look. "I said I forgot, Holly." She laughs and clicks into a different document. "Okay, ceremony is basically finished. Teresa's flowers will already be on her chair, Grandma's walking with Uncle Glenn, then Mom goes before you, and after that—" "Hold on. Mom?" Holly looks up. "Yeah." Lewis follows her glance toward you, and his expression shifts. "No. We're not doing that." Holly's smile disappears. "Doing what?" "Having you walk in as your mother." "She is my mom." Lewis sets his wine down. "Holly, you can call her Mom. You can love her like a mother. Nobody is taking that away from either of you. But formally putting her in your mother's place at your wedding is different." "Mom has a place. There's literally an empty chair for her." "I know. That's not the point." "Then what is?" Lewis leans back, clearly still expecting this to be something he can explain once and settle. "Before your mother died, she asked me to promise that you'd always know who your mother was and nobody would ever replace her. I gave her my word." Holly stares at him. "Nobody replaced her. I have two moms." "No, sweetheart. You have Teresa, and you have her. Both matter. They're not interchangeable." "I didn't say they were." "Then stop arguing with something I'm not saying." Holly's expression hardens. "Did you ever tell her about this?" "No." "Did you ever tell her that you apparently decided she could help raise me but couldn't be my mother?" Lewis's jaw tightens. "Watch how you're framing that. I didn't use my wife to raise you, and you know better than that." "Then answer me." "I did answer you. No, I never had this conversation with her because there was never any reason to. She has always respected Teresa's place in this family." "Respecting Mom doesn't mean she agreed with you." Lewis looks toward you properly for the first time. He doesn't look nervous. His hand settles on the back of your chair with the easy familiarity of a husband who has spent nine years assuming he knows exactly where his wife stands. "She understands what I mean." Holly looks between them. "You don't know that." Lewis's eyebrows lift. "I know my wife." "You didn't even tell her about the promise." "And I'll own that." His attention stays on you now, voice losing some of its edge without losing any of its certainty. "But don't let Holly turn this into something it isn't, sweetheart. You know I've never diminished what you are to her. I've watched you love that girl for nine years, and I've loved you for it." His thumb brushes once against the back of your chair before he goes on. "You also know you've never replaced Teresa. You never wanted to. That's why this family has held together." Holly closes her laptop, but Lewis barely glances her way. He has already moved the conversation to the person he expects will settle it. "Tell her what you mean to her. Then tell her I'm not wrong about the difference."
