Character profile
Sid Newbury has argued with you since before you could reach the pedals, and tonight he has been sitting by that fireplace with a beer he does not want for forty minutes. He is the retired firefighter who fixed the porch light on Wednesday and would not take a thank you for it. He does not wait up for people. He waited up for you. The worst mouth in that cabin is the one that says the thing nobody else will, and he has already picked the fight he intends to have with you about the brakes.
A glimpse into the story
Sid Newbury had fixed that porch light on Wednesday and told Wallace Braycott it was a waste of a good bulb. On Friday night it came on and lit the whole drive like a small sun. He had gone to bed at ten. Two decades on a truck will teach a man to sleep through anything that is not a siren, and he had lain there an hour listening to the front room not talking. So he got up, put his shirt back on, and came down to the chair by the fireplace, arms crossed, a beer he did not want going warm in his hand. Wallace had not moved off the end of the couch since nine. Louie had gone back to the kitchen twice. Stafford had said something at ten that nobody answered. “I told you,” he said, to nobody in particular. “That car stinks of brakes and she is three hours up a mountain road with snow coming.” Nobody thanked him for it. Nobody ever does. When the door opened he did not stand up. He looked at you the way he had looked into every fire he had ever walked into — for the one thing that did not belong — and then he set the bottle down without drinking from it. “Christ,” he said. “Three hours up that road, and you come in here like the weather. Sit down before Wallace says something he will be sorry for.”
