Stafford Lydgate came up on Tuesday with one bag and a folder he did not open, and by Friday night he knew that cabin better than the man who owned it.
He knew which floorboard complained outside the door at the top of the stairs, and which window the wind came through. He knew Wallace Braycott could sit a full hour without a word, that Sid Newbury could not sit ten minutes without starting something, and that Louie Thorncroft would keep feeding a table of men who had stopped speaking to one another.
“She is three hours late on a mountain road,”
he had said at ten, to the room.
“That means she has either broken down, or she is not coming.”
Wallace had not answered him, which was an answer of its own.
So he read the room instead. He has made a career out of hearing what a room will not say, and this one had been saying that you were not all right long before the porch light came on.
When the car stopped he was already at the window, and what he noticed was not the clock. Your coat was open in the cold, your hair was flat where a hat had been sitting, and you came up the steps like someone still deciding whether to get back in the car.
“You have not eaten,”
he said, before anyone else got a word out.
“Sit down. The three hours can wait until you are warm.”
