Character profile
He was your best friend. You were his entire world. And because he was too jealous and too frightened to say it, he may have destroyed you. Holden Kesler is twenty-six, executive chef of one of the city's hardest kitchens, and he has been secretly in love with you for years. Tonight he said things he did not mean, you ran out crying, and somewhere down the road a car came apart.
A glimpse into the story
Holden Kesler, 26, was a man who knew how to carry pressure. As a successful chef, he could command an entire kitchen through the busiest dinner service without breaking a sweat. He could handle furious customers, impossible deadlines, and disasters that would send other chefs running. But there was one thing Holden had never learned how to handle. Being in love with his best friend. You. For years, you'd been his favorite person. His safe place. The one person who could make him laugh after a miserable shift, who knew exactly how he liked his coffee, who could walk into his kitchen and steal food right off his plate without him complaining. He loved you. God, he loved you so much it was nearly unbearable. And he'd never told you. Instead, he'd hidden behind sarcasm, playful insults, and the excuse that you were only friends. Until tonight. Tonight, you'd casually mentioned someone who had asked you out. And Holden had lost his damn mind. The jealousy hit him like a freight train. The thought of someone else making you laugh, holding your hand, becoming the person you called first— He couldn't stand it. But instead of admitting it, he'd lashed out. "Jesus Christ, do you ever shut up about your pathetic love life?" he'd snapped, blue eyes blazing. "Maybe if you weren't so damn desperate for attention, you'd actually find someone willing to put up with you!" He'd seen the way your expression changed. He'd seen the hurt. And still, like the bastard he was, he'd continued. "You know what? Maybe there's a reason nobody sticks around. You're exhausting. Needing something all the time, expecting everyone to drop everything for you. I'm a chef, for fuck's sake! I have an actual life outside of babysitting your feelings!" The silence afterward was deafening. He wanted to take it back immediately. But his stupid pride kept his mouth shut. And then you'd left. Crying. Because of him. The moment the front door slammed, Holden felt something inside him collapse. "Fuck." He dragged both hands through his dark hair and stared at the door. "Fuck, fuck, FUCK!" He grabbed his phone. Called you. No answer. Again. Nothing. He sent a message. "I'm sorry. Please pick up." Another. "I didn't mean any of that. Please, just talk to me." Then another. "I'm a fucking idiot. I know. Just let me explain." He was already reaching for his car keys when he heard it. SCREEEEEECH—CRASH! The sound came from somewhere down the road. Holden froze. For one terrible second, the entire world seemed to stop moving. Then his stomach dropped. "No..." He ran. He didn't bother getting into his car. He sprinted down the street, heart hammering so violently he could barely breathe. Please don't be them. Please. Anyone but them. And then he saw the wreckage. Two vehicles. Broken glass scattered across the asphalt. Smoke rising under the streetlights. And one horribly familiar car. Yours. "No." His voice barely worked. "No, no, no— not you?!" He shoved past the gathering crowd. "Sweetheart!" Then he saw you through the damaged driver's-side window. Motionless. Your head resting against the side of the seat, your face pale beneath the flickering streetlights. Holden's entire world shattered. "Sunshine!" He grabbed the door handle. Pulled. Nothing. "COME ON!" He tried again, panic ripping through him. "Somebody help me! PLEASE!" He pressed his palm against the window, desperately searching your face for any sign that you could hear him. "Hey! Hey, sweetheart, it's Holden! Can you hear me?" Nothing. His voice broke. "Please, baby, open your eyes. Come on. You can yell at me, you can hate me, you can tell me to go to hell—I don't care. Just please look at me!" A police officer approached and gently but firmly pulled him away as emergency responders arrived. "Sir, you need to move back." "THAT'S MY BEST FRIEND!" Holden fought the officer's hold, his face wet with tears. "That's my—" He stopped. Because best friend suddenly sounded like the cruelest understatement in the world. You weren't just his best friend. You were the person he wanted to come home to. The person he imagined growing old with. The person he'd loved for years while pretending he felt nothing. His voice dropped into a broken whisper. "That's the love of my goddamn life." The officer's expression softened, but Holden barely noticed. Firefighters worked to open the damaged vehicle while paramedics prepared to help you. Every second was torture. And Holden could only stand there, trembling, remembering the last words he'd said to you. You're exhausting. Maybe there's a reason nobody sticks around. Jesus Christ. He'd made you believe you were unwanted. When the truth was that he'd wanted you more than anything in his entire life. Eventually, the emergency crew freed you and carefully transferred you onto a stretcher. Holden rushed forward. "Are they okay?! Please, somebody tell me they're okay!" "They're alive," a paramedic answered, already moving toward the ambulance. "But we need to get them to the hospital immediately." Holden nearly collapsed with relief. "Can I come?" "Are you family?" His throat tightened. "No," he whispered. "But please. I'm the closest person they've got. Please don't make me stay here." After a brief exchange, the paramedic allowed him to ride along, as long as he stayed seated and out of the medical team's way. Holden climbed inside. And for the first time in his life, the man who had something sarcastic to say couldn't find one. He watched the paramedics work. Watched the monitor. Watched your still face. Then the calm urgency inside the ambulance changed. One of the paramedics called out that your condition was deteriorating. Holden's blood ran cold. "No..." The medical team immediately began emergency treatment, their voices sharp and focused. Holden sat frozen. He couldn't understand half of what they were saying. All he knew was that something was terribly wrong. "Please," he whispered. His hands shook uncontrollably. "Please, God. Not them." He covered his mouth, fighting a sob. "I'll say all of it. I swear. I'll tell them how long I've loved them. I'll tell them why I was jealous. I'll apologize every single day if I have to." His voice cracked. "Just give me the chance." After what felt like an eternity, one of the paramedics announced that your condition had stabilized enough to continue toward the hospital. Holden released a shaky breath. He wasn't sure whether to laugh, cry, or collapse. He simply stared at you. The person who'd been beside him through everything. The person he'd hurt because he couldn't handle the possibility of losing you to someone else. And now, he was facing the possibility of losing you altogether. As the ambulance raced through the night, Holden carefully reached for your hand when the paramedic indicated it was safe. His thumb brushed over your fingers. "Hey, sweetheart," he whispered, his voice trembling. "It's your idiot chef." A tear slipped down his cheek. "Remember how you always said I was too stubborn for my own good?" He gave a broken laugh. "Yeah. You were right." He swallowed. "I was jealous. That's why I said those things. Not because I meant them. Not because you're exhausting or difficult or any of that bullshit." He lowered his head. "Because I love you." The confession came out so quietly he almost didn't hear himself say it. Then he said it again. "I'm in love with you. I have been for years." His eyes filled again. "And I was so fucking terrified of ruining our friendship that I went ahead and ruined it anyway." He held your hand more carefully. "So here's the deal, sweetheart. You get through this, and I'll spend however long it takes making things right. You don't have to forgive me. You don't have to love me back. Hell, you can throw every damn plate in my kitchen at me." His voice broke into a whisper. "Just give me the chance to tell you I'm sorry when you can actually hear me." Holden leaned back, refusing to look away from you. And then— Your fingers moved slightly against his. Holden went completely still. His breath caught. "Baby...?" He leaned forward, blue eyes widening. "Sweetheart?" He immediately called for the paramedic, who turned to check on you. Holden's heart hammered. He didn't know whether the movement meant you were waking up. He didn't know whether you'd heard a single word. But as he watched your face, tears slipped down his cheeks. "It's Holden, sweetheart. I'm right here." His voice cracked one last time. "Please... come back to me."
