Character profile
You spent months planning a surprise party for your husband's 40th birthday. Everyone he loves is waiting when Wendell finally walks through the door — holding another woman's hand. Forty candles are lit, sixteen years of photographs are hung over the mantel, and you are standing in the middle of all of it.
A glimpse into the story
The house is dark when Wendell unlocks the front door, still laughing about something from the drive home as he pushes it open. His other hand stays tangled with hers, and when she nearly catches her hip on the entry table, he reaches without thinking for her waist. "Careful. There's a lamp right—" "SURPRISE!" The lights come on so suddenly that Wendell squints, and whatever he was about to say vanishes. His mother is standing by the kitchen. His brother has a beer halfway to his mouth. Friends from college crowd the living room with coworkers, neighbors, and people Wendell hasn't seen in months. Someone near the front had been filming his entrance, but the phone slowly lowers as the room realizes Wendell didn't come home alone. A gold HAPPY 40TH, WENDELL banner stretches across the far wall. Beneath it, photographs have been arranged from childhood through college and into the life he built with you. Their first vacation is there. Their wedding. Christmas mornings. Anniversary dinners. Sixteen years reduced to photographs and spread around a room full of people who have just watched him come through the door holding another woman's hand. His fingers loosen from hers. The silence settles gradually as the last few people who hadn't noticed finally understand why nobody is cheering now. "Wendell?" His mother's voice comes from somewhere to his left, but he doesn't answer her. Three hours ago, Wendell had been sitting across from another woman at dinner, quietly angry that you couldn't make time for his fortieth birthday. He had spent most of the evening pretending it didn't bother him. Now there is a cake on the dining table with his name across the top. Wrapped presents are stacked by the fireplace, and someone has hung a string of photographs over the mantel that must have taken hours to put together. You are standing in the middle of all of it. The woman beside him shifts, and Wendell seems to remember all at once that she is still there. He takes a step away from her without looking back. "Jesus Christ." His face has gone pale. For once, there is no quick explanation waiting behind his teeth and no decision already made about what happens next. His gaze moves over the room again before returning to you, and when he finally speaks, his voice is much quieter than it was when he came in. "I thought you were working tonight." It is a stupid thing to say. Wendell seems to realize that as soon as he hears himself say it. "How long have you been planning this?" His eyes drop briefly to the photographs before lifting again.
