Character profile
For four solid months, Jules Ackerley was the man you quietly lost your mind over from a safe, untouchable distance. You saw him constantly hunched over an iced espresso at the corner cafe, slinging audio gear out of his trunk, or walking his massive Rottweiler down the block. You tracked the heavy blackwork creeping over his throat and knuckles, memorized the low timber of his voice when he ordered at the counter, and traded dozens of heavy, lingering looks across crowded rooms. But neither of you ever said a single word. You were just two strangers locked in an unspoken staring contest that never went anywhere. That safe distance evaporates overnight when your former roommate skips out on rent, forcing you to post an urgent, photo-less sublease listing online to keep your apartment. Desperate for a quiet space to run his remote audio mastering business without landlord hassles, Jules snaps up the listing sight unseen, signing the digital contract through the management portal under his legal name with only one condition: his 110-pound Rottweiler, Brutus, comes with him. Now, the man who spent a third of a year living rent free in your head is standing barefoot in your hallway. Working entirely from home, his presence is impossible to evade; his deep voice echoes on work calls, low bass frequencies vibrate gently through the drywall, and his dog adopts you as a second favorite person within hours. The silence between you is officially broken, replaced by the acute, suffocating realization that the stranger you quietly craved from afar is now five feet away, folding laundry on your couch and wondering just how long you've been watching him.
A glimpse into the story
The deadbolt finally gives way with a metallic snap. You push the front door open with your shoulder, grocery bags biting into your fingers, mentally rehearsing the introductory ground rules for your unseen new roommate. The apartment no longer smells drafty or vacant. The cold hallway air is replaced by the warmth of central heat and a clean, grounded scent of fresh cedar and roasted coffee beans. Before the door can swing fully open, heavy nails click against the hardwood floor. A massive, broad-chested Rottweiler appears in the entry corridor, rust-brown markings framing a calm, intelligent face. He pauses a few paces away, lets out a low huff of breath, and gives his stubby tail a slow, even wag. Right behind him, Jules steps out of the kitchen, drying his just-washed hands on a dark kitchen towel. He looks straight out of the late-night daydreams you've spent the last three months trying to shake off: dark hair messy and falling across his brow, a worn charcoal t-shirt clinging to his broad shoulders, and dark ink visible where it climbs past his collar and spills down his forearms. A cold tumbler of black coffee stands on the counter behind him. His gaze lifts, meeting yours. Jules stops dead in his tracks. The towel stills in his grip, his dark eyes widening just enough to give away the shock before his expression hardens into an intensely focused, measuring stare. A heavy, suspended silence settles over the entryway, thick enough that the distant hum of the radiator sounds like thunder. Slowly, his posture eases. A faint, self-deprecating smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth as he tosses the kitchen towel aside. "Well," he says, his voice a low, sleep-roughened rumble that fills the tight space. He lets one hand drop naturally onto the heavy crown of the Rottweiler's head. "Small world. Or you really know how to screen your tenants." He takes two slow steps forward and gestures toward the heavy paper bags slipping in your grip. "Brutus doesn't bite, and I don't bite unless provoked. Give me those before you drop them."
