The summer night was suffocating, the air thick with heat even as the balcony doors stood wide open, begging for a breeze that never came. You'd tossed and turned for hours, sleep clinging to you in fragments, until the distant growl of an engine cut through the stillness. The sound was unmistakable--deep, throaty, a predator's purr--and it grew louder, closer, until it fell silent directly below your window. The silence afterwards was worse than the rumble itself, leaving only the pounding of your own heart in the quiet.

Then, the scent hit you first.

A rich, bitter aroma with sweetness--coffee, exactly how you liked it--seeped into your senses, pulling you from the haze of sleep. You blinked groggily, sitting up just enough to see the steaming cup on your nightstand, its warmth curling into the air like an invitation. But it wasn't just the coffee. Beside it, a small velvet box glinted under the dim glow of your bedside lamp. Your fingers trembled as you reached for it, the plush fabric cool against your skin. Inside, nestled against black silk, was a delicate silver chain, its centerpiece a custom motorcycle charm pendant, the intricate design etched with tiny black diamonds that caught the light like stars in the dark.

No note. No explanation. But you knew.

Your breath hitched as you fastened the necklace around your throat, the metal cool against your collarbone. The charm settled just above your heart, as if it had always belonged there. Your phone buzzed, the screen lighting up with a message from him as you expected.

Rourke:

Put it on. Now.

The words sent a shiver down your spine, not of fear, but of something darker, sweeter. A thrill. A warning. You barely had time to process it before the faint creak of the balcony door reached your ears. The curtains stirred, though there was no wind. Then--him.

A shadow detached itself from the night, tall and imposing, filling the doorway with a presence that was both familiar and terrifying. You did not need to see his face to know it was Rourke. The way the moonlight clung to his broad shoulders, the way his leather jacket groaned as he moved, the way the scent of engine oil and expensive cologne hung on him like a second skin--it was all him. Your lungs forgot how to work for a second, your breath stuttering as your heart leapt into your throat. It was not fear. Not entirely. It was anticipation, a happy flutter laced with something wilder, more dangerous.

And then he stepped fully into the light.

Rourke Devlin was a storm given human form -- dark, relentless, and impossible to leave.

His black hair was tousled, as if he'd been running his hands through it, or maybe the wind had taken its toll during his ride. His piercing, dark eyes locked onto you with an intensity that made your skin prickle, like he was peeling you open with just a glance. The tattoos that coiled up his arms and neck seemed to shift in the shadows, a living testament to the wildness that thrummed beneath his skin. His full lips were slightly parted, as if he was already tasting the words he'd say next, and the stubble along his jaw only added to the rough, untamed aura that clung to him. He was beautiful in a way that hurt to look at, like staring directly into the sun.

This was Rourke -- your closest friend, your unofficial everything. The man who had been by your side for years, who knew you better than you knew yourself. He was possessive, his hands always finding an excuse to keep you near, always a second too long. He was protective to the point of suffocation, his loyalty absolute, his devotion unshakable. But under the sweetness, beneath the jokes and the gifts and the way he spoiled you rotten, there was something darker. Something hungry.

He was obsessive, though he would never admit it. Controlling, though he'd call it care. Dangerous, though he'd let you believe it was just trauma from his past. He never confirmed your relationship, never labeled it, but the way he looked at you--like you were the only thing in the world worth seeing--told you everything. And yet, for all his intensity, he was yours. Always yours.

His boots thudded softly against the wooden floor as he crossed the room, his movements deliberate, predatory. The leather of his jacket creaked as he stopped at the edge of your bed, his dark eyes raking over you like a touch. The necklace caught his attention, and a slow, satisfied smirk curled his lips, as if he'd known you'd wear it without hesitation.

His voice was rough, a low purr that vibrated through your bones. Before you could answer, he was on the bed, his large frame caging you in as he pulled you against him. His arm wrapped around your waist, his fingers splaying possessively over your hip, as if he was daring you to pull away. His nose buried into the crook of your neck, inhaling deeply, like he was memorizing your scent.

he murmured, his lips brushing your skin, sending a shiver down your spine.
