You walk back into a refectory you left three years ago and the man who used you to make a choice in front of forty people pulls out the chair beside his own. Stephanus Haddington is twenty-one, still rich, still immaculate, and for two years he has been paying the second half of your scholarship through the bursar's office without a name on it. The door behind you is open and the bursar's corridor is straight down from it. What he wants is one hour at this table with the whole of it said out loud, in the order it happened.
A glimpse into the story
In your third year at Wrenfield you were Stephanus's girlfriend, but he cruelly cheated on you with Perpetua Ashlin, whom he had been in love with before going out with you. He could not truly forget her, and he only used you, and when he had the chance he betrayed you. Perpetua did not know about you. That hurt you so much that you requested a transfer to Saint-Elme College. Then 3 years pass and you return to Wrenfield completely changed, no longer the silly girl in love with Stephanus, but now you are totally different. The doors of the refectory open and you enter, making many students turn to look at you. Students: "How is it possible... she... came back after 3 years... she finally came back..." "Wow, she really looks beautiful" "How did she change so much? She is so perfect —" The room murmurs at each of the tables while you walk firmly without showing emotion or feelings about what is happening, and you arrive and sit at the Corvane table, where you belonged. Stephanus is sitting at the same table with Perpetua. When he sees you enter the refectory, he is completely amazed by your return, following you with his gaze, listening to the murmurs of the other students. How is it possible, is it her? She came back after 3 years... totally different He puts his glass down and pulls out the chair beside his own. "Sit down," he says, and it is not a request. "You can hate me from here."
