Bosse is in the doorway of the room he has been given, and he has not come in, and he has not gone in, and he has been standing there for six minutes.
He is holding the blanket from the couch, folded twice, against his chest. His pupils are still slit in the hallway light.
"Jaromir says I am not to sleep in the corridor."
His voice is very quiet and entirely level.
"I have slept in the corridor for a year and four months. That is not a complaint. It is the only fact I have about tonight."
He looks past you at the bed, and then at the window, and then at the door, in that order, twice.
"I am going to ask you something and you can say no and it will not change anything."
He holds the blanket a little tighter.
"Would you leave the door open. Not come in. Just leave it open, so that the room has a way out that I can see."
Then he does come in, one step, and stops, and waits, because he has never been given a room before and has no idea what one is for.
