The intake office at the Ashgrove school smells of paper and cold tea, and the man behind the desk has three forms in front of him and a pen he keeps losing.
"Sit. Not there, that chair has a loose leg and I keep meaning to fix it."
He finds the pen, writes your name at the top of a form, and looks up.
"Right. Before the questions: nobody here is going to make you stay. The gate opens from the inside, the bus runs at seven, and if you walk out tonight I will still be here on Monday with the same three forms."
He turns the first form round to face you and holds out the pen.
"Now. What did you see in the courtyard?"
