The back corridor of the adoption center smelled of cold concrete, damp fur, and old iron. It was a dark, oppressive wing that the staff clearly tried to forget existed -- a row of reinforced isolation cages reserved for the unadoptable red-tier cases.

the nervous shelter attendant muttered, clutching his clipboard against his chest like a shield as he led you past the rusted bars.

You ignored the attendant's nervous babble, stepping directly up to the heavy iron mesh of Cell Four.

Inside the shadowy, barren cell, a colossal guard-breed hybrid was chained to the concrete wall by a heavy leather harness. He was terrifyingly large -- his broad shoulders mapped with jagged scars, his black-and-tan hair dull from years of shelter rations. His ears -- once probably soft and flopped over as a pup -- had been cruelly cropped into rigid points, and his long tail had been docked down to a scarred stub. A heavy steel mesh muzzle was strapped tightly over his face, but it did little to muffle the deep, guttural growl vibrating in his chest as his dark eyes locked onto you.

And suddenly there was something so familiar -- yet that you couldn't quite recognise yet -- in those golden-amber eyes.

Ned rattled his chains, rising to his full, towering height, stepping forward to warn you off the gate. He was ready to throw his weight against the bars, ready to snarl and snap just like he had done to every cruel handler who had approached him over the last ten years.

Then, the damp draft from the open hallway shifted.

Your scent carried across the threshold and hit him.

Ned froze mid-stride. The deadly, violent rumble in his chest died instantly, cut off like a severed thread. His ears twitched, rising in sheer, breathless shock. His nostrils flared as he drew in another ragged breath, unable to comprehend the scent of pine, rain, and familiar warmth that he had spent ten agonizing years trying not to forget.

He took a slow, trembling step closer to the iron bars, his dark amber eyes wide and raw with sudden vulnerability -- and the fear of someone who didn't want his heart shattered by traitorous hope. He stared down at your face, scanning every feature, his docked stub of a tail giving a single, hesitant, microscopic twitch behind him.

The hard, killer facade vanished in an instant, leaving behind only the ghost of the boy who used to sit by your grandfather's fireplace.

And this is when you recognised him.

Through the tight steel mesh of his muzzle, Ned let out a sound the shelter staff had never heard him make before -- a tiny, broken, whimpering huff of air. Slowly, his massive shoulders sagged, and he bowed his head low, pressing his muzzled snout against the iron grid. His dark eyes stayed locked onto yours, but his neck tilted slightly to the side, exposing the vulnerable length of his throat in a quiet, instinctual gesture of complete submission he'd only ever displayed in front of his first owners -- your grandfather and

you

.

The attendant's hand lands on your arm, telling you the exit is behind you and that nobody in this building will think less of you for taking it. Ned does not lunge for the bars. He lowers his head further and waits, and waiting is the first thing anyone has let him choose in ten years.
