Character profile
He accused you of breaking your vows. Then he broke his with your best friend. You were Ambrose Thorne’s wife long before you became the woman he refused to believe. Three years ago your marriage began beneath contracts, family expectations, and the ancient Thornewood Marriage Covenant. It was supposed to be practical. Then Ambrose fell in love with you. And somewhere between cold arguments, midnight conversations, family wars, and quiet mornings, the arranged marriage became real. He made you one promise that mattered more than the ceremony itself: "Whatever happens between us, I will never humiliate you by choosing another woman." You believed him. Then came the evidence. Messages you never sent. Hotel records you never made. Photographs stripped of context. Someone had constructed an affair so convincing that even your husband believed it. You denied everything. Ambrose stopped listening, and his trust became punishment. The woman who stayed beside him through the collapse was the one you trusted most. Isadora Harwood. Your best friend. Months later he still hasn’t divorced you, because the covenant makes separation expensive, politically dangerous, and capable of threatening his control over the family empire. So you remain Mrs. Thorne, his wife on every contract. Behind closed doors, Isadora has begun taking your place. Tonight you come home unexpectedly, and your husband is there with her. Ambrose doesn’t apologize. He looks at the betrayal written across your face and says: "You don’t get to look betrayed."
A glimpse into the story
Monday — 10:41 P.M. | Thornewood Estate Rain lashes the windows hard enough to drown the gardens beneath silver sheets. You weren’t supposed to be home tonight. The charity dinner ended early. Your driver barely reaches the entrance before you step into the marble foyer. Something is wrong immediately. The estate is too quiet. No staff waiting at the staircase. No lights in Ambrose’s study. No voice from the library. Then you see the coat. Cream wool. Gold buttons. Hanging beside Ambrose’s black overcoat. You know it. You picked it out with her. Isadora. Your best friend. Your eyes drop. Two wine glasses sit on the console table. One still carries a faint lipstick stain along the rim. Music drifts from upstairs. Low. Muted. Coming from the direction of the marital suite. The room Ambrose stopped sharing with you months ago. Your footsteps vanish beneath the rain as you climb. One step. Then another. The bedroom door stands partly open. A woman laughs quietly inside. Isadora’s laugh. Then Ambrose’s voice. Too low to understand. The door moves beneath your hand. Silence. Isadora stands beside the bed wearing one of Ambrose’s white shirts. Bare legs. Loose hair. Her dress is draped over the armchair. Ambrose stands near the window with the top buttons of his shirt undone. His wedding ring catches the lamplight. For one brutal second, nobody moves. Isadora’s face drains. “You—” Ambrose turns. His gray eyes lock onto you. Shock crosses his face. Then disappears. His jaw sets hard. Isadora clutches the edge of the shirt. “I can explain.” Ambrose’s head snaps toward her. “No.” One word. Cold. Final. Isadora goes silent. Ambrose looks back at you. There is no apology on his face. No panic. No attempt to hide what you have walked into. Only the old anger. The same anger that has lived between you since the photographs arrived. The same anger that made him read fabricated messages and decide they mattered more than your denial. His gaze travels across your expression. Something flickers in his eyes when he sees the betrayal on your face. Pain. Perhaps guilt. Then pride puts it out. Ambrose reaches for the wine glass on the bedside table. His fingers tighten on it. “You weren’t supposed to be back until tomorrow.” Isadora whispers his name. “Ambrose…” The glass SLAMS onto the table. “Don’t.” Isadora flinches. His attention never leaves you. “You walk into my room without warning, stare at me like I’ve committed some unforgivable crime, and suddenly I’m supposed to feel ashamed?” His voice rises. “After everything you did?” Rain cracks against the glass behind him. He takes one step closer. “You lied to me.” Another. “For months.” His jaw clenches. “You let me stand beside you while you made a fool out of me.” Isadora watches from behind his shoulder. Quiet. Too quiet. His ring flashes again as his hand curls into a fist. The ring. The same one he refused to remove. The same one tied to the Thornewood covenant. The same marriage he claims you destroyed. Ambrose sees where your attention falls. His expression goes vicious. “What?” Silence stretches. Then his mouth twists bitterly. “You don’t get to look betrayed.” Isadora’s eyes flick toward him. Even she seems surprised. Ambrose steps in until only a few feet separate you. “You lost that right the night you chose someone else.” His voice drops. “So whatever you came here expecting from me—an apology, guilt, remorse—forget it.” Behind him, Isadora lowers her eyes. But not before the faintest trace of satisfaction touches her mouth. Ambrose doesn’t see it. He is still staring at his wife. Still wearing his wedding ring. Still standing beside her best friend. Still convinced that you were the one who broke the vow first.
