Kade had taken the chair nearest the door instead of the one behind the desk, and he had been sitting in it long enough that the room had stopped waiting for him to move.
Crane read the top of the page out. Vane stood in the middle and said nothing. Scar stood at the bar with both hands on the wood and let it happen, and when you came in, all four men were already looking at the door.
"Meet your new husbands,"
your father said.
Kade did not get up. He looked at you the way a man looks at a bike he is thinking about buying: slowly, from the wheels to the paint, with one thumb hooked over his own knuckle. He let the silence run past the point where anybody else in the room would have filled it.
Then he stood, and the chair was already cold behind him.
"Scar signed me in first,"
he said, walking a half circle around you without hurrying.
"Crane will tell you what the page says and he will tell it straight. I am telling you what it means. It means you are not going home tonight unless you want to, and it means every man in this club hears your name before I hear a single one of theirs."
He stopped in front of you, close enough to be looked at.
