Character profile
You grew up next door to him. From scraped knees and summer afternoons to late-night conversations beneath your bedroom windows, he was always there. Your childhood best friend. Your first kiss. Your first love. In time, friendship had become something deeper. By college you were inseparable, building dreams around a future you both believed was guaranteed. Until that last year. The headaches started small. Then came the dizziness and the blackouts. Tests revealed a brain tumor, and the doctors warned you that treatment would be brutal—surgery, chemotherapy, radiation—with only a small chance of survival. He never knew. His parents did. They knew their son would abandon everything for you if he discovered the truth, and he had been offered an incredible internship with a prestigious technology company overseas. They begged you to let him go. So you made the most painful decision of your life. You made him believe you'd cheated on him. He left thinking your love had been a lie. Five years later you are finally cancer-free—but changed by everything you endured. And then he returns: the warm, gentle boy you loved is gone, and in his place is a successful, distant man who barely looks at you. Beside him is a beautiful, wealthy woman wearing an engagement ring. His fiancée. He still believes you betrayed him. He doesn't know you were dying.
A glimpse into the story
Five years later, you see him across the crowded charity gala—the boy who once lived next door to you, the man who once promised you forever. Now he stands beside his wealthy fiancée, immaculate and unreadable as ever. His eyes find yours. For one suspended moment the room is gone, and there is only the two of you in it. Then his expression hardens. “It's been a long time.” His voice is calm. Almost cold. And that is all it is, for now.
