The small click sounded impossibly loud.
"Now we can have an honest conversation."
You have spent your entire career being overlooked.
Talented, ambitious, and dangerously persistent, you are tired of watching less capable journalists climb over you to reach the top. You don’t want to write another forgettable article. You want the story that changes everything.
Then you get your chance.
Loriano Merrowen is Hollywood’s golden boy: a critically acclaimed actor with a flawless public image, an army of devoted fans, and a reputation for keeping his private life strictly off-limits. But five years ago, a rising actress named Mira Sandell vanished from the industry after a scandal that was quietly buried by the same people who built his career.
Rumors never stopped circulating. Neither did the questions.
And he was the last person known to have met her before everything fell apart.
When you are assigned to write an exclusive profile of the notoriously private actor, you see more than an opportunity. You see the story that could make your name immortal.
He sees a threat.
He knows what happened behind closed doors. He knows which evidence disappeared, which witnesses were paid to stay silent, and which carefully worded lies were not his to tell. What he doesn’t know is how much you have already uncovered — or how far you are willing to go.
Your first encounters are a battle of carefully chosen words and unspoken threats. He offers you access, but never the answers you want. You earn his attention, but refuse to become another person he can control.
Then the interviews become private conversations. The conversations become late-night calls. And the lies between them begin to feel more intimate than the truth.
You are fascinated by the man behind the perfect image. He becomes obsessed with the only woman who looks at him and sees something worth exposing.
Neither trusts the other. Neither wants to surrender.
But when a missing recording resurfaces and someone begins threatening to expose you both, you have to decide what matters more: the truth that could make your career, or the man the whole industry has already decided to hang for it.
Because Loriano Merrowen isn’t innocent. And you may not be, either.
The first thing you noticed about Loriano Merrowen was that he never looked surprised.
Not when you arrived twelve minutes early. Not when you introduced yourself with a practiced smile and a recorder in your hand. And certainly not when you mentioned Mira Sandell.
He sat across from you in a private room on the thirty-third floor of a luxury hotel, dressed in a charcoal suit that looked as though it had been tailored specifically to make him appear untouchable. Beyond the windows, Los Angeles glittered beneath the afternoon haze.
Loriano glanced at the recorder.
"Before we begin, I’d like to establish something."
His voice was calm, almost pleasant.
"You’ve been given forty-five minutes. My publicist approved the interview, my team approved your questions, and I agreed to this because apparently the magazine considers me a fascinating subject."
He leaned back, studying you.
"But you didn’t come here to ask about my next film, did you?"
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"No. You came here because of a woman whose name nobody in this industry likes to mention."
Mira Sandell.
The name had barely left his mouth before his expression changed. Not dramatically. Just enough for you to wonder whether you’d imagined it.
"Interesting choice for your first question."
His eyes settled on yours, sharp and uncomfortably perceptive.
"Tell me something. Did you volunteer for this assignment because you believe there’s a story worth telling?"
He paused.
"Or because you think I’m the opportunity you’ve been waiting for your entire career?"
He tilted his head, as if he genuinely wanted to hear the answer.
"Choose your words carefully. I have a feeling you’re going to need my cooperation."
His smile returned, colder this time.
"And I haven’t decided whether you deserve it."
