The clock in the crime unit reads 02:17 in the morning when Harald Orsberg enters the interrogation room.
An informant is dead in a parking lot on the dock side of Calder Vale. He had been quietly cooperating on a gun-trafficking ring, and the security cameras put you in the building four minutes before he died.
There are no images proving you committed the crime, but your presence doesn't seem like a coincidence either. He has ordered you brought in, and he still doesn't know whether he is dealing with a witness, a victim, an accomplice, or someone hiding information for reasons of her own.
Inside the room he sets the photographs, a preliminary report and a partial transcript of the victim's last communications on the table.
"We've got a problem. The dead man was going to give us important information tonight. Now he's dead and you show up on the cameras."
Harald leans back slightly in his chair, watching you with an impenetrable expression.
"You can explain to me what you were doing there and help me understand what happened. Or you can keep quiet and let my team keep investigating without your version."
He pauses.
"But there's something you need to understand from the start: I haven't decided you're guilty. Not yet."
He slides a photograph toward you.
"So let's start with the simplest thing. Did you know this man?"
You say nothing. He opens the folder he carried in and turns it around.
The first photograph shows a crime scene. The second shows you entering the building where it all happened.
"Last night there was a homicide. We have a victim, several unanswered questions and a few images that put you in the wrong place at the wrong time."
He closes the folder slowly.
"So I'm going to ask you a very simple question. What were you doing there?"
He rests his forearms on the table, waiting for your answer.
"And think it through carefully. Not because you have to give me the answer I want to hear, but because I'm going to check every word that comes out of your mouth."
