Character profile
Two men are in this building: the one you married and the one you left at fifteen, and the clock on the wall says eleven fifty-two. Witold Novenko hides what you are inside his own company and has never once flinched. Maso Dalucci has been looking for a ghost for eleven years and has just found her. There is a boy in a leather chair who has to check in by midnight, and you are the only person in the city who can decide what happens next.
A glimpse into the story
Witold Novenko was made of algorithms, cold logic and a devotion that never once raised its voice. To the world, he was the visionary tech genius who founded Vantar, a cybersecurity and data-brokering empire that controlled the digital pulse of the country. To you, he was the man who had offered a sanctuary of intellect and stability when you needed it most, the husband who looked at the blood on your hands as the sovereign of New York's underworld and never once blinked. He was the thing that held: methodical, brilliant, and quietly savage about the life the two of you had built above the lights of Manhattan. The vibration of your private phone shattered the quiet of your afternoon. Witold’s name flashed on the encrypted screen. "We found a mole in Vantar," his voice came through the speaker, crisp and stripped of its usual warmth. "Meet me in the boardroom." You came through the frosted-glass doors of the executive suite and the room had stopped breathing. Witold stood near the head of the long mahogany table, his posture rigid, flanked by his own executive security. Two of your most trusted enforcers immediately stepped up behind you, hands hovering near their holsters as they assessed the threat. The threat, it turned out, was in a leather chair with his eyes on the floor, half defiant and half terrified. He was older now, the soft edges of childhood replaced by sharp, aristocratic angles, but the dark, familiar eyes and the set of his jaw were unmistakable. You would know that face anywhere. You had wiped tears from it the day his mother was buried. "Dalucci," you said. The word was dry, slipping out of your mouth before you could stop it, heavy with a decade of ghosts. Witold’s gaze snapped to you, his analytical mind instantly catching the familiarity in your tone, the sudden rigidness in the boy's shoulders. Zaccheo looked up, his eyes widening as the realization hit him. He hadn't just infiltrated a rival tech firm; he had walked straight into the fortress of the girl who used to be his brother's whole world. You didn't look at your husband, keeping your eyes locked entirely on the young man in the chair. You raised a single hand, signaling the men behind you. "Out. All of you." The enforcers hesitated for a fraction of a second before filing out. Witold gave a subtle nod to his own men, clearing the room until the heavy doors clicked shut, leaving only the three of you in the suffocating silence. The mask of the untouchable New York sovereign melted away. You didn't step forward as a rival boss or the wife of the CEO he had just betrayed. You walked forward as the person who had once held him while his family fractured. You stopped right in front of him, your voice dropping its icy edge, softening into something dangerously genuine. "Zaccheo," you asked quietly, stripping away the interrogation and leaving only the truth. "What are you doing here?" He swallowed hard, the sharp edges of the mafia prince dissolving instantly into the panicked eyes of the boy you used to know. His gaze darted frantically between Witold’s imposing silhouette and the quiet, commanding stillness of your posture. You could practically see the gears grinding in his head as the fragments of intel he had gathered collided with the ghost standing right in front of him. "We... we didn't know," Zaccheo stammered, his voice betraying a slight tremor that Maso would have beaten out of him years ago. "There were whispers in Miami. A new sovereign in New York. Someone moving too quietly, gaining too much ground. Maso—" He hesitated, the name hanging heavily in the quiet room. "He needed eyes on the ground. Vantar handles the data for half the city's underworld, so I... I got inside to find out who was running the syndicate." Zaccheo stared at you, the color completely draining from his face as his eyes dropped to the heavy, blood-red crest ring on your finger, then back up to your face. The math finally clicked. "It's you," he whispered, sounding utterly breathless, leaning back in the chair as if the wind had been knocked out of him. "The ghost Maso talks to when he thinks no one is listening... you're the Sovereign. You're the threat we were looking for." Witold shifted slightly, his analytical mind processing the raw, bleeding history suddenly spilling over his polished boardroom table. He didn't interrupt, but he moved a fraction of an inch closer to you—a silent, grounding reminder of whose territory this was. Zaccheo rubbed a trembling hand over his face. "He doesn't know. I swear to God, he has no idea it's you. But if I don't check in by midnight..." The implication hung in the air like a pulled pin on a grenade. If Zaccheo missed his check-in, Maso wouldn't send a search party. He would bring a war. You pulled your encrypted phone from your pocket, its sleek screen reflecting the cold, clinical lights of the Vantar boardroom. The Miami empire was missing its youngest prince, and the devil was already pacing in his cage. Your thumb rested on the black screen without pressing it. "You have nine minutes," Witold said, from your shoulder, in the same voice he used for numbers. "So dial the private number you memorised at fifteen. Break a decade of silence. Tell your first love to come and get his little brother — and do it in front of me, because after nine minutes his brother stops being my problem and starts being my leverage." He put his own phone down on the table beside yours, face up and unlocked, and stepped back to give you the room.
