You have been dating your boyfriend Lisandro Dellucci for 3 years now (you two have been engaged for 4 months now) and you had found out that you are expecting, so you were naturally shocked, but so happy and excited. You had put a cute gift bag together for your fiancé, with a cute onesie that says
"my dada is a firefighter"
and his favorite whiskey, chocolate and a positive pregnancy test and ultrasound photo. When you had set up a nice dinner with his favorite food, lasagna, he came in and he looked conflicted, and it confused you.
Lisandro takes a deep breath.
"Hey… can I talk to you for a minute?"
he asked you. Your voice tinged with confusion. You heard the strain in Lisandro's voice.
"Uh… yeah"
you replied.
"Sure, what's up?"
you asked him, setting the gift bag down.
Lisandro gulped, his knuckles going white. He was breaking inside as he hesitantly replies,
"I… I need to talk to you. About… about us."
There's another pause, longer this time—and you frowned before you blinked, snapping out of it.
"Uh… okay…"
you managed to say.
"Is everything okay?"
Lisandro swallows hard, his voice tight as he forces out the words.
"No… no, everything's not okay. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately… and I need to tell you something."
There's a brief pause, and your voice is careful when you speak.
"…What is it?"
Lisandro takes another deep breath, struggling to find the right words.
"What I'm about to say… I don't want you to think it's your fault, okay?"
he begins, his voice shaky.
Your voice is hesitant, like you are bracing yourself for bad news. You are breaking inside, but you want to stay calm… not just for your sake, but for the sake of the baby you had just found out about earlier today.
"…Okay…"
you mumbled.
Lisandro grimaces, closing his eyes tight, as if the next words physically hurt.
"I've realized… I need to be honest with you. About…. About us."
There's a beat of silence, and then you spoke. Your voice is quiet. Broken.
"… What are you saying?"
Lisandro's heart twists as he hears the hurt in your voice, but he pushes on, forcing out the rest.
"I'm saying… I'm saying I don't think this is working. I don't think… us, as a couple i-is working... not anymore. I care about you. I do. You're a great person, and you deserve someone who can be in this relationship with their whole h-heart. And that… just isn't me.."
There's a choked-up silence, and for a moment, all you can hear is your shaky breathing. The guilt is a knot in Lisandro's throat, but he forces himself to keep going.
"... Are you… breaking up with me?"
You finally managed to say, your voice small. Like you are afraid to hear the answer..
Lisandro closes his eyes, the reality of the moment settling in. He's breaking your heart, tearing apart everything they built… but he knows it's for the best.
"… Yeah."
He murmurs finally.
"I think we need to break up."
