The royal ballroom shone beneath a thousand candles.
Gold chandeliers hung over hundreds of nobles. Musicians played beneath crimson banners. Servants carried silver trays between dukes, duchesses, ambassadors, and the most powerful families in the kingdom.
Tonight was supposed to belong to you.
For years, you had been presented as the future Crown Princess.
Your name had been spoken beside the Crown Prince's since childhood.
Tonight, however, your family already knew something you had not been told.
Your younger sister stood beside your mother, dressed in an extravagant gown of ivory silk and diamonds.
Lady Craye leaned toward her companions.
"Doesn't the younger sister look rather pleased with herself?"
Lady Saxe concealed a smile behind her fan.
"Wouldn't you be? Imagine taking your own sister's future right out of her hands."
The royal trumpets rang out.
Every conversation stopped.
The King rose from his throne.
"Tonight, before the assembled nobility of this kingdom, I shall announce the woman who will stand beside my son as Crown Princess."
Hundreds of heads swung toward you.
Then the King continued.
"After careful consideration, the Crown has decided that you shall no longer be considered for this marriage."
Silence.
Absolute, suffocating silence.
"Instead, His Royal Highness shall marry her younger sister."
Someone dropped a glass.
It shattered on the marble.
Then the whispers broke out.
"Her SISTER?"
"Good heavens!"
"After all these years?"
"How humiliating."
"Did they really announce it in front of everyone?"
Lord Ashwick burst into laughter.
"Well! That's one way to dispose of an unwanted bride."
Another nobleman smirked.
"Perhaps the Prince developed better taste at last."
Your father slammed his wineglass onto the table.
"ENOUGH!"
Wine soaked the white tablecloth.
Lord Ashwick slowly turned.
"Something the matter, Your Grace?"
"I will not have my daughters discussed like common entertainment!"
Ashwick's smile vanished.
"Then perhaps you should have advised His Majesty against turning one into a public spectacle."
The Duke shoved his chair backward.
"Watch your tongue."
Ashwick stood.
"Or what?"
Several nobles moved away.
Their mother caught her husband's sleeve.
"Not here!"
He wrenched his arm free.
"Take your hand off me."
Across the ballroom, your sister stepped forward.
She was smiling.
She already knew.
Their mother at once straightened her gown and adjusted the diamonds around her throat.
"Go on, darling."
Your sister approached the throne.
"Your Majesty, I am deeply honored."
Her voice trembled with carefully weighed emotion.
"I shall devote myself entirely to His Royal Highness and the kingdom."
The King nodded approvingly.
"An excellent answer."
Behind her, Lady Craye whispered loudly enough to be heard.
"How fortunate the family had a second daughter."
Saxe laughed.
"An improvement, apparently."
Your sister glanced toward you.
Her smile sharpened.
"Oh, sister."
She placed a hand against her chest.
"I do hope you aren't upset."
A pause.
"After all, none of us can choose whom the Crown considers worthy."
Several noblewomen exchanged pleased looks.
Their mother immediately intervened.
"Your sister has done nothing wrong. I expect you to behave with dignity."
Their father turned abruptly.
"And there will be no outbursts. Is that understood?"
Their younger sister lowered her lashes.
"Please don't blame me. I never wanted to hurt you."
Yet she made no effort to conceal her engagement ring.
The King raised his hand.
"Bring forth the royal betrothal rings."
Two attendants came forward carrying a velvet cushion.
Your sister climbed the steps toward the Prince.
And there he stood.
Towering over the assembled nobles, the heir possessed the intimidating build of a warrior rather than a pampered royal.
Broad shoulders beneath black ceremonial armor.
A narrow waist.
Powerful arms.
Large, veined hands resting calmly at his sides.
His face was devastatingly handsome, severe and aristocratic, with a sharply defined jaw and heavy-lidded eyes.
Half the unmarried women in the ballroom watched him with poorly concealed longing.
He appeared utterly indifferent.
His younger fiancée extended her hand.
He accepted it.
No smile.
No affection.
No tenderness.
The ring slid onto her finger.
Applause thundered through the ballroom.
"LONG LIVE THE FUTURE CROWN PRINCESS!"
Your sister beamed.
But the Prince wasn't looking at her.
His gaze had moved.
Toward you.
Calm.
Heavy-lidded.
Unhurried.
His eyes traced your movements, lingering on your face before lowering toward your lips.
Then your waist.
The graceful line of your neck.
The faint movement of your pulse.
His jaw tightened.
One muscle shifted beneath the sharp angle of his cheekbone.
His expression remained otherwise unreadable.
He said nothing.
Beside him, his fiancée followed the direction of his gaze.
Her smile faltered.
"Your Highness?"
He did not answer at once.
Her fingers tightened around his arm.
"Your Highness."
His eyes finally lowered toward her.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"Everyone is watching us."
"Then smile."
His voice was cold.
An order.
Not affection.
Her cheeks burned.
But she smiled.
The King approached them.
"You will now share the ceremonial dance."
The musicians began to play.
The Prince placed a hand against his fiancée's waist and led her toward the center of the ballroom.
She leaned closer.
"Are you happy?"
He looked down at her.
"The engagement has been completed."
"That isn't what I asked."
His expression hardened slightly.
"Then ask a question that concerns the ceremony."
Her lips parted.
He continued the dance as though nothing had happened.
Across the ballroom, Lord Ashwick raised another glass.
"To the discarded daughter!"
Several nobles laughed.
"May her next engagement last longer than the announcement!"
Your sister's friends dissolved into vicious giggles.
Their father struck the table again.
"I WARNED YOU!"
Ashwick spun toward him.
"And I warned YOU, Your Grace!"
The Duke seized the front of Ashwick's coat.
"Say another word about my family!"
Ashwick shoved him backward.
"Then stop making your family the kingdom's entertainment!"
Chairs crashed.
Guards advanced.
The music faltered.
"ENOUGH!"
The King's command shook the hall.
The two noblemen separated, breathing heavily.
The King pointed toward them.
"Another disturbance, and both your families will answer before the Royal Council."
Then he turned toward your father.
"Control your household, Duke."
The insult landed publicly.
The Duke's face went dark.
He turned toward you.
"Do you see what this has caused?"
Their mother caught his arm.
"Please. Not now."
"NOT NOW?"
He pulled away from her.
"Our family is being laughed at!"
Your sister suddenly abandoned the dance and approached.
"Father, please!"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You're ruining my engagement!"
Their mother immediately embraced her.
"Oh, darling."
Then her gaze hardened toward you.
"Your sister deserves one beautiful evening. Surely that isn't too much to ask."
Lady Saxe stepped forward.
"Perhaps you should excuse yourself."
Craye smiled cruelly.
"Yes. Her presence is becoming rather uncomfortable."
Your younger sister dabbed beneath one eye.
"I don't want her removed."
She paused.
"But perhaps it would be kinder if she left before people say anything worse."
The Prince remained near the center of the ballroom.
Silent.
Imposing.
His expression had cooled into something almost frighteningly remote.
His eyes moved from the sobbing fiancée to her parents.
Then toward you.
Again.
His heavy-lidded gaze lingered.
The King noticed.
"Son."
The Prince turned his head.
"Your Majesty."
"Your future bride is waiting."
For one long moment, the Prince did not move.
Then his jaw tightened.
"Of course."
He offered his arm to your sister.
She seized it immediately, throwing you one last triumphant glance.
But their father was not finished.
He stepped forward, his voice cutting through the renewed music.
"Daughter."
Every nearby noble turned.
"Come here."
His expression was black.
"You will congratulate your sister."
Their mother nodded sharply.
"And you will do so graciously."
Your sister lifted her chin.
Her friends watched with eager anticipation.
Lord Ashwick smiled over his wineglass.
"Oh, this should be splendid."
From beside his newly betrothed fiancée, the Prince slowly raised his eyes toward you.
His expression remained calm.
Unreadable.
His jaw was still tight.
And beneath the chandeliers, surrounded by hundreds of nobles waiting to witness one final humiliation, the entire royal court fell silent.
Waiting for you.
