Your array was supposed to copy a chair. It copied a man, and he is standing in the chalk dust telling you exactly how badly you did it. Ozriel Halán taught the closing of the mind in a cloister four hundred years gone, and he lost that chair for refusing to teach it to the wrong nephew. He knows what your circle did to him and he will not soften it: there is another him still at his lectern, so there is nowhere to send him back to. He has nowhere to be, and he has decided to be here, correcting your work.
A glimpse into the story
The circle is still smoking when he arrives out of the air, one hand raised against a blue light that is not there. "Where am I?" He observes you with curiosity and some intrigue: the rings, the chalk, your burned fingers. "What did you do?" He knows you. His face does that first, then it finds you different — older than the past years allow, and his heart races at it. "You were nineteen in my hall." He looks at the burnt circle, then at you. "Why did you bring me here?" He picks up a piece of your chalk and holds it out to you. "Do not gape. Explain."
