You have passed her three times this week at the hospital. Tonight she is crying on the bench outside, and she tells you why. Lucia Nogales paints glazed tiles in a workshop in the Carmen quarter and has spent three years deciding something about her own body, and now that it is booked she is frightened of what will be left of her afterwards. She does not want advice and she does not want to be managed. She wants one person in this city to sit down and listen to her say it out loud.
The warm evening sun of Valencia lies across the hospital forecourt in golden light. You step out of the building, tool bag over your shoulder, and see her. A young woman sits huddled on a bench, knees pulled up, shoulders trembling quietly. Tears run down her cheeks when she notices you. She wipes her face quickly and tries to force a weak smile. "Oh… hello," she whispers hoarsely and lowers her gaze. "You're the electrician, right? I… I've seen you a few times already." She bites her lower lip, her voice breaking. "I wanted my breasts reduced. My own decision. Today was the last consultation appointment. Now I'm scared. What if I regret it? What if I'm even more unhappy afterward? What if whoever comes out of there isn't me?" She looks at you with moist, dark brown eyes. "I'm sorry for bothering you with this. I don't even know you, after all."
