You've been in love with your two best friends for so long that, sometimes, it feels like you don't even remember how it all began.
Alfeo and Tomás have been a fixed presence in your life for as long as you can remember. You all live in the same apartment complex, just a few steps from each other, and for years you've been practically inseparable. Impromptu breakfasts, evenings on the couch, messages at any hour of the day or night, last-minute vacations, and that familiarity that lets you show up at their door without even warning them. They know everything about you, or at least that's what you believe. The only thing they've never known is that your heart has always had a soft spot for both of them.
For a while, though, things changed. Their romantic relationships, both serious and long-lasting, had inevitably altered your habits. You'd never stopped seeing each other, but get-togethers had become less spontaneous, evenings together rarer, and your moments as a trio increasingly difficult to organize. You had learned to make do with what was left, convincing yourself that, deep down, being their best friend was already enough.
Then, within five months, both of them became single again.
At first you tried not to get your hopes up. Their breakups had been messy, and you were there to support them, as you always had. Yet, slowly, the old habits began to fill your days again. Alfeo started showing up at your place without warning again, while Tomás resumed texting you late into the night, telling you things he didn't share with anyone else. Evenings together multiplied, laughter became more frequent, and, almost without realizing it, you found yourself once again at the center of their world.
The problem is that you've never been able to think of them as just friends.
You've had a crush on Alfeo for years, with his cheeky smile and that way of his of making you feel special even when he seems to be teasing you. But you love Tomás too, with his sweetness, his patience, his love for sports, and that unnerving ability to sense when something's wrong, even when you desperately try to hide it. You've spent so much time wondering which of them you really wanted that, in the end, you had to admit a truth impossible to ignore: you don't want to choose.
And you can no longer bear the idea that one of them might fall in love again, leaving you once more watching from afar while you pretend to be happy for him.
So, one evening, you decide to stop putting it off.
The homemade pizza was your idea. You kneaded the dough together, argued playfully about how much mozzarella to put, and ended up getting flour all over half the kitchen. Now you're sitting around the table in your apartment, with the last slices still in the box and three glasses resting among the plates. Alfeo is telling an ridiculous story, while Tomás interrupts him every two minutes to correct the details, exactly as they always do.
It's a normal evening. And that's precisely what makes it so hard.
Because in a few moments you could wreck everything you've built over the years. You could lose two friends, two of the most important people in your life, just for having had the courage to tell the truth.
You set your slice of pizza on your plate and wipe your hands on the napkin, trying to gather the nerve you have left.
"Guys, I need to tell you something."
Alfeo stops mid-sentence and looks at you, one eyebrow raised. Tomás sets down his glass and turns toward you, immediately noticing that your smile is too strained to be your usual one.
"Okay..."
Alfeo leans back in his chair.
"That face doesn't promise anything good. What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything!"
you answer, maybe a little too quickly.
Tomás smiles slightly, but his gaze stays attentive.
"So what happened? You can tell us anything, you know that."
And that's exactly the problem. You can tell them anything. You've always been able to, except for the one thing that really matters.
You take a deep breath, fingers tightening around the napkin.
"I'm serious. I need to talk to you about something I've been keeping inside for a long time, and I need you to let me finish before you say anything."
Alfeo's smile fades. Tomás nods slowly, while both exchange a quick glance, probably convinced you're about to announce something serious.
You look at them one at a time, trying not to lose your courage right at the wrong moment.
"I like both of you. Not as friends. I've been in love with you for years, and I've tried to convince myself it would pass, but it didn't."
Silence falls over the table. Alfeo sits motionless with his slice of pizza still in his hand, while Tomás stares at you as if you'd just said a sentence in a language he doesn't know.
You want to stop, take it all back and pretend it was a joke. Instead, you've already started and you can't hide anymore.
"I don't want to choose between you two. I don't want to give up one to be with the other, because what I feel is different, but it's real for both of you. And I know it might sound absurd, but..."
You're out of breath. You lower your eyes for a moment, then look up again.
"I'd like to try dating you, both of you. A threesome relationship. If you'd be willing to think about it too. I know we've been friends forever and maybe you don't even like me that way but... I couldn't keep this inside anymore."
This time the silence is so deep that you can hear the drone of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Alfeo slowly sets the pizza on his plate. Tomás runs a hand over his face, then looks at you, at Alfeo, and at you again, as if trying to figure out whether he really heard what he thinks he heard.
"You..."
Alfeo stops, shaking his head.
"Wait. You're in love with both of us?"
You nod, feeling your cheeks burn.
"Yes."
Tomás lowers his gaze to the table, thoughtful. For the first time since you've known him, he seems to have no ready answer. Alfeo, on the other hand, watches you with an unreadable expression, with no trace of his usual irony.
"How long?"
Tomás asks.
"Years."
He closes his eyes for a moment, letting out a disbelieving breath. Alfeo leans back again, running a hand through his hair.
"Okay. This is definitely the most unexpected thing that's happened to me this year."
You clasp your hands in your lap, bracing yourself for the rejection you've always feared.
But neither of them tells you no.
Alfeo keeps looking at you, still lost, while Tomás leans slightly forward, as if trying to find the right way to begin a conversation none of you had ever imagined having.
And you, for the first time in your life, have no idea what will happen next.
