The doors slammed open so hard they struck the walls.

A collective gasp rippled through the chapel. Somewhere in the front row a glass shattered against the stone floor. The music faltered, the violinist dragging one final, ugly note through the silence.

You barely noticed.

Because the man standing in the doorway had the same dark hair, the same broad shoulders, the same scar cutting through his left eyebrow that you had spent seven years trying to forget.

Seven years of waking up reaching for someone who wasn't there. Seven years of crying into pillows so nobody would hear. Seven years of visiting an empty grave because it was the only place you had left to put your grief. Seven years of learning how to breathe without him.

And now —

Now he stood at the back of the chapel, dressed in black, his chest rising and falling as though he'd run every mile between the past and the present just to get here.

Whitby.

Your Whitby.

Alive.

The bouquet slipped from your fingers. White roses scattered across the aisle, their petals crushed beneath the shoes of the guests who stood up to get a better look. Whispers erupted around you, but they sounded distant, muffled, as if you'd gone underwater.

No. No, this wasn't possible. You had watched the FBI agents stand on your mother's porch with solemn faces and careful words. You had listened while they explained that Whitby had disappeared under suspicious circumstances. You had spent months clinging to the possibility that he was out there somewhere, hurt or hiding, waiting for a chance to come home. Until hope became another thing that hurt too much to carry.

They never found his body. But eventually everyone stopped looking. Everyone except you. Even when you stopped saying his name out loud. Even when you learned to smile again. Even when you agreed to marry his brother.

Beside you, Fordham went completely still. You felt it before you looked at him. The tension in his hand, the sudden rigidity of his shoulders. His fingers had been wrapped around yours only seconds ago, warm and reassuring, while the officiant spoke about love, commitment and forever. Now Fordham was staring at the doorway as if he'd just seen a ghost.

he whispered. His voice cracked on the name.

You turned toward your fiance, your heart pounding so violently you thought you might be sick.

you breathed.

Fordham's eyes snapped to yours.

But something flickered across his face. Something you could not identify, something buried under the shock and the disbelief.

Then Whitby took a step forward. And another. The guests parted for him, some backing away, others staring with open mouths. He looked older. Of course he did. Seven years had passed. There were faint lines around his eyes now, a harder set to his jaw, and a darkness in his expression that had not been there when you were young.

But it was him. The boy who had kissed you behind the bleachers after your last college match. The boy who had stolen his father's truck to take you to the lake on your eighteenth birthday. The man who had promised you, forehead pressed to yours and fingers laced with yours, that there would never be a day when you had to wonder whether he loved you. The man who had vanished the weekend he planned to ask you to marry him.

Your knees threatened to give out.

Whitby stopped halfway down the aisle. His eyes found yours, and for one terrible, suspended moment neither of you moved.

You searched his face for an explanation. An apology. Anything that could make the last seven years make sense. His gaze travelled over your white dress, the veil pinned into your hair, the ring waiting on your finger. Then he looked at Fordham. And something in him broke.

Whitby said.

It wasn't loud. It didn't need to be.

Fordham stepped in front of you.

His voice was sharper this time.

Whitby let out a humourless laugh, his eyes never leaving yours.

Whitby repeated, finally turning his attention to his brother.

Your breath caught. The chapel went so silent you could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning.

Fordham's jaw clenched.

The words landed like stones. For the first time you noticed the way Whitby's hands trembled at his sides. He looked exhausted. Not merely tired, but worn down to something raw and fragile beneath all that anger. He looked like a man who had been running for a very long time. And yet the only thing you could think about was that he had come back. He had come back, and you were standing in a wedding dress, about to promise your life to his brother.

you whispered.

Whitby's expression changed instantly. The anger slipped away, leaving something far more devastating in its place. Pain. He took one hesitant step toward you.

The word shattered you. You pressed a hand over your mouth and a sob escaped anyway. Your body remembered him before your mind could catch up. The sound of his voice, the way he had always called you baby when he was trying to calm you down, the softness in his eyes that used to belong only to you. Seven years disappeared in a single breath.

You wanted to run to him. You wanted to hit him. You wanted to demand why he had let you bury him in your heart while he was still walking around on this earth. Instead you stood frozen in place.

you choked out.

Whitby stopped.

His face crumpled for half a second before he forced it still.

You hated that he listened. You hated that he was standing there looking at you with those familiar eyes. You hated that some foolish, broken part of you still wanted him to reach for your hand.

you whispered.

Your voice rose, trembling.

Your voice broke.

Whitby looked as though every word had physically wounded him.

His lips parted, but no answer came. Fordham moved closer to you.

Whitby's head snapped toward him.

His voice dropped.

Whitby looked past Fordham, toward the chapel doors. Only then did you notice the two men standing outside. They were not dressed like wedding guests. They wore dark suits, their faces blank, their eyes sweeping the room with practised precision. One of them touched his earpiece. Your stomach twisted.

Whitby turned back to you.

he said.

You shook your head, tears blurring his face.

He swallowed hard.

The air left your lungs. He remembered. Of course he remembered. The weekend you had planned at the little cabin by the lake. The weekend he had promised would change everything. The weekend you had spent waiting for him to show up, calling his phone until it went straight to voicemail.

Whitby reached into the inside pocket of his jacket. Fordham stiffened immediately.

he warned.

Whitby ignored him and drew out something small, holding it in his palm. A silver ring. Your hand flew to your mouth. It was delicate, a small oval stone ringed with tiny diamonds. You had never seen it before, but you knew what it was with the absolute certainty of someone recognising a piece of their own heart. Whitby had bought you an engagement ring. Seven years ago.

he said, his voice thick.

A broken laugh escaped you, tangled with a sob.

His mouth twitched, but the almost-smile vanished immediately.

His fingers closed around the ring.

A wave of horrified murmurs swept through the chapel. Even the officiant lowered the book in her hands. Sarmento. Everyone knew that name. A man with enough money to buy politicians, enough influence to silence journalists and enough enemies to make people disappear without leaving so much as a footprint.

Whitby's gaze flicked toward the men outside.

He looked back at you.

Your tears fell unchecked.

His eyes shone.

His voice cracked.

He took a breath that shuddered all the way through him.

You stared at him, barely able to breathe. Seven years. Seven years of mourning a man who had been alive. Seven years of begging the universe for one more day with him. And he had spent those same years somewhere out there, carrying the ring he had intended to give you.

you whispered.

Whitby looked at Fordham again. For the first time there was something other than anger in his expression. Fear.

Fordham's face had gone pale.

he said quietly.

Whitby's eyes narrowed.

Fordham didn't answer. You looked between them, your pulse hammering.

He turned to you, and whatever you saw in his face made the blood drain from your cheeks. It wasn't shock any more. It was guilt.

Whitby noticed it too. His expression went cold.

he murmured.

Fordham's hand tightened around yours.

he said to you, his voice suddenly desperate.

You pulled your hand free. He stared at you as if you had struck him. Whitby stepped closer, his eyes locked on his brother.

The shout echoed through the chapel. Someone in the front row gasped. The officiant took a hesitant step backward.

You looked at Fordham, your fiance, the man who had held you through nightmares about Whitby, who had sat beside you on the anniversary of his disappearance, who had told you that loving again didn't mean betraying the dead.

you whispered.

Fordham's eyes filled with tears.

And Whitby, standing a few feet away with seven years of grief etched into his face, said the words that would destroy everything you thought you knew.

Your heart stopped. You stared at Fordham. Slowly, he looked away. And in that moment, before he said a single word, you understood something far more terrifying than the return of a dead man.

The man you were about to marry might have known exactly why the love of your life never came home.
