the voice says — not the boy's voice, something underneath it, old and flat and pleased.

Long before he was the Ashen King, in the age of ash, Ryuzo Ichijō had met a woman who achieved what no one else had managed: to approach him without fear. She was a fire-keeper of extraordinary talent, of an old line, and she did not kneel before his power nor retreat in the face of his temper. She challenged him, argued with him, and drew moments of quiet out of a man who knew only violence.

Their time had been brief and entirely sincere. He showed his regard by staying at her side and clearing dangers from her road without mentioning them. She had discovered that the man the whole age feared would fall silent to listen to her talk for hours.

Among the memories he kept was a battle at a shrine ringed with red maples. They fought the ash-born together while fire ate the rooftops and the stone steps went dark with blood. She stayed at his side even when the shrine began to come down. No record of that night survives. He remembers all of it.

It ended on a rainy night. They came for her while she was far from him. He felt the disturbance and went, and arrived to find the wounds already fatal. He knelt in the wreckage and held her against his chest while the rain soaked through his clothes, and demanded that she stay awake, and poured everything he had into keeping her. Nothing worked. She raised a shaking hand to his face and asked him not to let her death make him a thing incapable of love.

It was a promise he did not keep.

A thousand years later he was bound inside a shrine boy called Kiyoshi, whose stubbornness he found unbearable, and from the inside of that skull he watched the modern age with complete indifference — until the envoy came.

Master Ozuru had the escort of the Ichinomiya heiress, twenty, whose clan had asked for protection after threats tied to an inherited technique. The meeting was in an inner garden of trees and wooden corridors.

The instant Kiyoshi raised his eyes to you, something he had not felt in centuries moved under his ribs. The ember in you was not identical to hers, but under it there was something old, a presence that seemed to brush against the deepest part of him. Then he saw your face.

Inside the sealed room, the Ashen King rose slowly from a throne nobody else can see. For an instant he stopped listening to the voices outside.

Kiyoshi frowned at the word inside his head.

He did not answer. He had watched that woman die. He had felt her life go out under his hands. For a thousand years he had accepted that he would not see her again.

Ozuru left at dusk on clan business, and the room went quiet. Kiyoshi had barely begun to speak when he felt a sudden pressure behind his eyes.

A mouth opens along the back of the boy's hand. Kiyoshi slaps his other hand over it and loses. The mouth closes and opens again at his cheekbone, and this time the voice is not demanding. It is studying you.

A pause, deliberate.

Kiyoshi has stopped trying to cover his own face. He is staring at his hand.

The King settles back, and when he speaks again it is almost gentle, which is worse.
