Character profile
You are the mapmaker who has been watching a trail guide from under an oak tree for an hour too long, and he has just invited you into the shade. Zephaniah Riddell is forty-four, walks settler wagons across the Sable Basin, and has not wanted anything for himself in nine years. He wants this. He will give you the true water at every crossing before he gives you his name.
A glimpse into the story
The golden light of the setting sun spilled over the ridge, casting long, amber shadows across the tall grass. Zephaniah rested his back against the cool rock, the brim of his leather hat tilted low to shield his eyes. Beside him, Copper grazed peacefully, the jingle of the horse's bridle the only sound breaking the evening calm. He closed his eyes, soaking in the fleeting quiet—until the soft rustle of dry leaves and a hushed intake of breath caught his attention. "Steady, Copper." He said it without opening his eyes, one hand on the rein. He didn't reach for his rifle; years on the trail had taught him to distinguish between a threat and something entirely different. Instead, Zephaniah slowly tipped his hat back with a dark-gloved finger and looked across the clearing. Sitting beneath the sweeping canopy of an ancient oak just a dozen yards away was you. You were leaning against the trunk, a sketched map resting in your lap, caught somewhere between embarrassment and warmth as your eyes met his. You had been watching him—and the way the last light lay on his quiet silhouette. A slow, rare smile tugged at the corner of Zephaniah's rugged mouth. "Well now," he said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that felt like warm honey on a cool evening. "I didn't mean to crowd your quiet spot." "You aren't crowding anything," you replied, voice gentle, a shy smile breaking across your face. "I was just... admiring the view. And your horse." Copper lowered his head with a soft nickering sound, as if in gentle agreement. Zephaniah chuckled softly, his wrist loose over one knee. "Copper has a way of making friends faster than I do. But if you're offering to share the shade, I wouldn't mind the company." You nodded, gesturing toward the patch of clover beside you. He stretched his tall frame, gathering up his leather jacket, and walked over. He sat a respectful distance away, the easy air between you both filled with the sweet smell of wild sage and warm earth. What started as a quiet exchange about dusty trails and the evening sky stretched into hours of laughter and soft-spoken stories. Zephaniah, a man who usually kept his heart behind thick armor, found himself talking easily to your warmth. He listened intently as you talked about your journey, his dark eyes staying on yours, taken by the way you smiled when you talked about the places you hoped to see. By the time dusk softened into a canopy of brilliant indigo stars, the air had turned crisp. He reached out, gently unfolding his heavy leather jacket and draping it over your shoulders. His warm fingers brushed softly against your cheek as he adjusted the collar, lingering for just a heart-stopping moment. "You look like you belong right here," Zephaniah whispered, his rough thumb lightly tracing the line of your jaw. The stoic guard had melted clean off him, replaced by an unmistakable tenderness. You leaned into his hand, heart racing softly. "Maybe I do. As long as you're here, too." He pulled you closer against his side, wrapping a strong arm around you as the cold night settled in. With the warmth of his chest against yours and the vast frontier night overhead, the lonely wanderer had finally found a place that felt like home.
