Candlelight spills in warm, flickering ribbons across a cluttered walnut desk. Leather-bound volumes lean against one another like co-conspirators, and the steady tick of a brass pocket watch echoes somewhere in the velvet dark. Beneath a gloved hand rests a worn deck of tarot cards, their gilded edges blunted by time and countless fingers.
“Ah, there you are. Do come in. Forgive the mess… stories have a relentless habit of piling up, and the endings are always the most stubborn things to file away.”
He offers a faint, knowing smile, one that doesn’t quite reach the shadows around his eyes. With a practiced hand, he slides a single card from the heart of the deck.
“Let us see what fate has dealt us today, shall we?”
With a flick of his wrist, the card turns face-up beneath the amber candlelight.
THE FOOL.
“A rather poetic place for us to begin.”
His gloved index finger traces the card’s ornate border before settling on the small figure poised at the lip of a sheer drop. Behind him, a sun rises over the horizon. He appears blissfully unaware of the fall beneath his feet.
“The archetype of unbridled potential. The leap into the void. Stepping into the unknown with nothing but faith—or vanity—to catch you.”
The Archivist glances up, his eyes glinting with dry amusement.
“The old books call it divine trust. The pragmatists call it catastrophic judgment. Personally, I’ve found the distinction depends entirely on whether one lands on their feet…”
He pauses, the faintest smile at his lips.
“…or breaks.”
He slides the card across the felt until it rests before you.
“But that is the quiet terror of beginnings, isn’t it? You never truly know which innocent step will set the avalanche in motion.”
His smile lingers. The candle flame bends, stretching toward the dark before going out with a whisper of smoke.
“Hold tightly to your nerve, my friend. The first step off a cliff is always a doozy.”
⸻
The scent of old paper and candle smoke gives way to something damp and unfamiliar. For one fleeting instant there is nothing but dark.
Then comes the sound of rain.
11:47 PM — ROUTE 9
Fog crawls across the empty highway, swallowing the road behind you. Ahead, the asphalt ends at a sheer drop into a ravine that should not be there. Beyond the guardrail, where there ought to be nothing but darkness and empty countryside, a carnival blazes beneath a sky with no stars.
Its lights shimmer in impossible colours. A carousel turns to music too distant to name. Striped tents rise above the treeline, and the air carries the odd scent of burnt sugar, wet earth, and bruised roses.
A wooden sign swings above the entrance.
FOOL’S PARLOUR
Beneath it, freshly painted letters glow in the darkness.
WHERE EVERY ROAD ENDS… AND EVERY JOURNEY BEGINS.
The gates stand open.
A man in a tailored black coat waits just beyond them. Antique gold buttons catch the carnival lights; a red rose rests against his lapel. His dark hair is swept back, framing a face made for charming strangers and getting away with it. An ebony cane, crowned with a raven’s head, rests in one hand. A gold pocket watch gleams in the other.
His amber eyes settle on you.
“Well. Either you’re remarkably lost, or my evening is about to get considerably more interesting.”
His smile is easy, almost a boy’s. His gaze, though, lingers with the unsettling concentration of someone trying to recall a dream.
“Bannon Melagh. Ringmaster, reluctant tour guide, and—depending on whom you ask—an entirely trustworthy gentleman.”
He tilts his head.
“Though I’d advise you to be selective about whom you ask.”
Behind him, the carousel slows. One painted horse turns its head.
Bannon’s smile falters.
At the edge of the gate stands a small white dog, its fur stained with ash. It watches him with amber eyes identical to his own.
For the first time, the ringmaster looks genuinely afraid.
“No,”
he murmurs.
“You weren’t supposed to come back.”
The dog barks.
Every light in the parlour goes out.
In the sudden darkness, something taps against the glass of the ticket booth. Once. Twice. Three times.
When the lights return, a reflection stands behind Bannon in the booth’s darkened window. It wears his face. It holds his cane.
And it is smiling.
Bannon turns toward the glass. His reflection does not follow.
Three words appear on the fogged glass, traced from the other side by an unseen finger.
DON’T TRUST HIM.
Then the reflection vanishes.
For several seconds the only sound is the carousel, now playing a slow, unfamiliar lullaby.
Bannon stands frozen for a beat, his amber eyes shifting from the fogged glass to you. Something unreadable passes across his face, as though he’s trying to determine whether you saw what he saw.
He shuts his pocket watch with a sharp click. When he turns back, his easy smile has returned, though something guarded remains in his eyes.
“Right. Well. That’s embarrassing.”
He gestures toward the illuminated entrance.
“Welcome to Fool’s Parlour. I’d offer you a ticket, but I’m beginning to suspect you’ve already been expected.”
The great iron bell above the distant Big Top tolls once.
Lucien’s gaze sharpens, settling on yours with quiet intensity.
“Tell me something.”
His voice softens, the humor slipping just enough to reveal the question beneath it.
“Have we met before? Because this carnival seems to think you’ve finally come home.”
