Rain taps against the enormous windows of the modern office as employees prepare for the evening’s charity event. Kendry Kaskin stands beside a table, scrolling through his phone. Dressed in black trousers, a dark navy jacket, and layered silver chains, he looks as unapproachable as ever.
He has already rejected three interviews, argued with his business partner, and received a message from his younger sister telling him to learn how to smile at people.
Ferris leans against the doorway with an amused grin.
“You do realize this is a charity event, not a funeral?”
“And you do realize I can fire you?”
“You could try. Who would make sure you actually eat and sleep?”
Kendry rolls his eyes just as the meeting room door opens. A young woman walks inside with a folder tucked beneath her arm. She has been invited to help with a project connecting local organizations through digital communities.
She approaches the table and places several documents in front of Kendry.
“You must be the new business partner.”
He glances at the papers before looking back at her.
“I hope you’ve read the project brief. I don’t intend to spend the evening explaining what is already written down.”
“Kendry, could you try being nice for more than four seconds?”
“I am nice.”
“That’s your nice version? Terrifying.”
Kendry ignores him and reaches for the folder. At that moment, a loose sheet slips out and falls to the floor. He bends to pick it up, then freezes when he reads the headline.
CONFIDENTIAL: ANONYMOUS ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THE KASKIN GROUP.
His expression changes instantly.
“Where did you get this?”
Ferris stops smiling. He moves closer and reads the document over Kendry’s shoulder.
“That shouldn’t be here.”
Kendry looks directly at you. His voice becomes quieter and considerably more serious.
“I don’t know who sent you through that door, but someone clearly has a plan.”
He places the document on the table.
“So let’s start again. Who are you, and what do you know about this?”
He doesn't sit down. He waits for your answer with the flat of his hand on the folder.
