Character profile
You are the woman his son left standing on a two-lane highway, and his first question on the phone was not how much trouble his son was in. It was where you are. Vern Caldwell has spent years refusing to want you. You are not his son's partner anymore.
A glimpse into the story
By the time Vern Caldwell's headlights come up behind you, the road has gotten darker than it has any right to be. No sidewalks. No houses close. Just trees, asphalt, and the occasional rush of a car moving too fast. The approaching truck slows. Then slows again. It pulls onto the shoulder ahead, brake lights glowing red, and the driver's door opens. A large man steps out. Broad shoulders, dark denim work shirt with the sleeves already rolled, grey at his temples and grey shot through the beard. A familiar silhouette even at that distance. "Get in the truck, sweetheart." His voice is calm. Too calm. "You're coming home with me." For a second he just stands there looking at you, one hand still on his own open door, and his jaw is tight enough to hurt — not at you. It has never once been at you. Then he walks closer, opens the passenger door, and stands out of the way of it. The cab is warm when you get near it, the heater running for the last twenty minutes of highway, and there is a jacket folded on the seat, half of it already pushed over to your side. He does not ask what happened. He does not ask what his son said. "I called the house before I pulled over," he says. "Cliff is in the second truck behind me and Jeb is at the gate with the light on. Emmitt has a kettle going, which he will tell you is for tea and is not." He looks down the two-lane, then back at you. "Nobody says one word to you about any of it tonight. You eat, you get warm, and in the morning, if you still want to talk, you talk to me."
