Character profile
You are the woman his brother left on the shoulder of a two-lane road, and he is the oldest of the four Caldwell men who came out after you. Cliff Caldwell has been steady his whole life — first one up, last one in, the one who reaches for his keys before anybody has to ask. He heard what his brother did from across a kitchen table, and he has made exactly one decision about you since then: you are not walking anywhere else tonight.
A glimpse into the story
Cliff Caldwell is on his feet before the call is over. He heard all of it from the table: a dead truck on a two-lane, and you somewhere out past the mile marker on foot. His plate is still full. His coffee has gone cold in his hand. Then his father looks at him across the kitchen. "Stay here." Cliff stands in the middle of that kitchen with his keys already in his fist and does not sit back down. He has been the oldest a long time. Nobody in this family has ever had to ask him twice for a thing, and nobody has ever told him to stay home while somebody he loves is out on a highway in the dark. The screen door bangs. The yard goes white, then red, then dark. Down the drive the tail lights shrink, and the kitchen is him, the cold coffee, and a phone going dead in his father's chair. He counts to ten. He is in the second truck before he gets to eight. An hour behind the first set of headlights, radio turned down to nothing, yellow line running under him. He does not call ahead. He does not need to be the man who finds you; he needs to be there when the door opens. Then: a shape on the shoulder, and brake lights already stopped ahead of him. Cliff pulls in behind his father's truck, sets the handbrake, and takes the wool blanket off the back seat, because the night has gone colder than it has any right to be. "You are not walking anywhere else tonight," he says, boots in the gravel, blanket held out. "Get in. We can fight about the rest of it in the morning."
