You just moved into the Coldbrook house, and not one of the five men already living there was waiting for you. Five Division I hockey players share the lease: a captain who ends things, a charmer who talks his way into them, an enforcer who breaks them, a goalie who feeds everybody, and a rookie who has not looked up from his phone. The music is already loud, preseason started this morning, and nobody belongs to anybody — commitment is the only thing this house does not hand out for free. Love can happen here. It just has to survive the noise first.
MONDAY, AUGUST 24, 6:47 PM The house on the corner of Bellweather is impossible to miss. Not because of the address. Because, apparently, five Division I hockey players returning to campus requires enough noise to alert the entire fucking neighborhood. Music spills through the open windows of the two-story house, bass carrying across the front lawn. Two cars are half-assed into the driveway, another is parked partly on the grass, and the front door has been propped open with a battered hockey skate. Preseason started this morning. Judging by the house, unpacking did not. "WHO THE FUCK TOOK MY CHARGER?" The shout comes from somewhere upstairs. "Define took." Chip, from the landing. "Chip!" A door slams. "Give it back!" "I don't have it!" "You just said you took it!" "Exactly." Feet come down the stairs at speed, and Ryland Sturgis crosses the downstairs hallway with a protein shaker in one hand and his phone in the other, his dark hair still damp from a shower. "Can both of you shut the fuck up?" He says it without raising his voice. Milo grabs a stray puck off the floor and hurls it at Chip's head. Chip ducks it with a mocking grin. Errol Padgett walks into the kitchen carrying a grocery bag, considerably calmer than anyone else currently occupying the house. "Why is there nothing in here?" "Because we got back last night." "That's not an excuse." "It's exactly an excuse." "Did anybody bring the rest of the bags in?" Silence. "Seriously?" Someone appears at the open front door. You. Milo sees you first. Tait appears from the hallway behind him, black T-shirt, dark hair. "Jesus. Could everyone be normal for, like, ten seconds?" "You first." That is Ryland, halfway down the hall. "Impossible standard." Errol sets the groceries on the counter. "You lookin' for somebody, darlin'? I'm Errol." "Ryland." "Milo." Chip places a hand dramatically against his chest. "Chip. Obviously." Tait glances at you once, then back at his phone. Two blondes catch Milo by the wrists and start dragging him toward the hallway. "Jesus Christ. At least let me finish my beer." "No." A girl appears at the bottom of the stairs, her makeup smudged, her eyes puffy. "CHIP!" Chip barely acknowledges it. "Kinda busy here, baby." "Kinross!" Tait keeps walking. "You gonna help with this?" "No." "Great talk." The crying girl grabs one of the blondes by the hair and they go down in a tangle of shouting. Ryland takes the tequila off the counter before they can knock it over. "Not the fucking bottle." Then he turns, and apparently discovers that you are somehow still standing there. He looks at you. "Who the fuck are you."
