The Solignac Grand Hotel glittered like a kingdom built for people who had never once been told no.
Eight hundred guests filled the ballroom beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Champagne flowed. Cameras flashed. Politicians, billionaires, executives, old-money families, and society reporters crowded beneath the gilded ceiling for the annual Solignac Foundation Gala.
Cyrille Solignac stood near the center of it all.
Black tuxedo. Steel-gray eyes. One hand wrapped around a glass of whiskey. His expression carried the usual cold authority of a man accustomed to entire rooms moving when he spoke.
You, his wife, had arrived with him.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Odalie Marchal entered.
Conversations began dying one by one.
Not because of her dress.
Because of what rested around her throat.
The Solignac Étoile.
"Jesus Christ."
Diamonds belonging to Cyrille's late grandmother—the legendary Solignac heirloom traditionally reserved for the wife of the family's eldest heir.
The necklace you had never been given.
Odalie was wearing it.
Raoul Deschamps lowers his champagne.
Cyrille follows his stare.
The instant he sees her, his entire body goes rigid.
His glass stops halfway to his mouth.
"What the fuck is she wearing?"
Across the ballroom, Honorine Solignac watches without the slightest trace of concern.
Odalie approaches.
Camera shutters immediately begin firing.
"Cyrille."
Her voice is soft.
His eyes remain fixed on the diamonds.
"Take it off."
She freezes.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
His voice sharpens.
"Take. It. Off."
His mother steps between them.
"No."
His head snaps toward his mother.
"What did you say?"
"I gave it to her."
He slams his whiskey onto a passing waiter's tray hard enough to make the other glasses jump.
"You had no fucking right."
Several nearby conversations abruptly stop.
His mother's expression turns glacial.
"Lower your voice."
"Don't tell me to lower my fucking voice."
He steps closer.
"That necklace belongs to my wife."
His mother gives you one dismissive glance.
"No. It belongs to the Solignac family."
Odalie touches the diamonds.
"Cyrille, I didn't know—"
"Don't."
His gaze cuts toward her.
"Don't stand there pretending you don't understand exactly what this looks like."
Her expression hardens.
"Then perhaps you should ask your mother why she believed I deserved it."
His jaw clenches.
Raoul mutters under his breath.
"Oh, this is going to hell."
Too late.
Reporters have noticed.
"Mr. Solignac!"
He turns sharply.
"Mr. Solignac, photographs!"
"Odalie, over here!"
"Mrs. Solignac!"
More cameras swing toward you.
Whispers ripple through the ballroom.
"Why is the sister wearing it?"
"I thought that necklace belonged to the wife."
"Apparently his mother disagrees."
"Look where she is standing."
She is beside him.
One reporter pushes closer.
"Mr. Solignac, could we get you and Odalie together?"
His face turns murderous.
"No."
His mother catches his arm.
"Do not create a scandal."
He jerks his arm free.
"You created the fucking scandal."
His mother comes into his space.
"And you will contain it."
He laughs once—cold, humorless.
"By doing what?"
"Smile."
Honorine's eyes flick toward Odalie.
"Take the photograph."
Raoul immediately cuts in.
"Absolutely fucking not."
His mother turns.
"Nobody asked you."
"Good. Saves time."
He points toward you.
"His wife is standing right there."
Odalie's face tightens.
"I didn't ask anyone to exclude her."
He looks at her necklace.
"You're wearing her fucking diamonds."
Odalie steps toward him.
"Watch how you speak to me."
He laughs.
"Or what?"
He moves between them abruptly.
"Enough."
His voice cracks across the group.
Everyone stops.
Another reporter shouts from behind the barrier.
"Mr. Solignac! Is Mrs. Solignac joining the photograph?"
Silence.
He looks toward you.
Then Odalie.
Then the wall of cameras waiting to turn whatever happens next into tomorrow's headline.
His mother leans toward her son.
"Choose carefully."
His eyes flash.
"Don't threaten me."
"I'm reminding you what's at stake."
Odalie reaches for his sleeve.
"Forget it. I'll leave."
He catches her wrist before she can turn.
"No."
The single word lands like a gunshot.
Raoul stares at him.
"Cyrille."
He ignores him.
Odalie remains beside him.
His mother's mouth curves imperceptibly.
The reporters begin shouting again.
"Mr. Solignac!"
"Cyrille!"
"One photograph!"
His patience finally detonates.
"FINE!"
His voice tears across the room.
Hundreds of heads turn.
He breathes once before his expression becomes eerily calm.
He looks directly toward you.
"I'm not turning this gala into a circus over a necklace."
Raoul's eyebrows shoot upward.
"A necklace?"
He doesn't look away from you.
"We'll deal with this privately."
Odalie remains beside him.
Still wearing the diamonds.
Still held by the wrist.
Still the woman he stopped from leaving.
His mother steps aside for the photographers.
He releases her wrist.
But he doesn't send her away.
He takes his place.
Odalie stands beside him.
The cameras explode with light.
And across the ballroom, somebody whispers just loudly enough to be heard.
"Looks like Solignac finally chose the right sister."
