Three weeks. That is apparently all the time Ozric Lacombe needs to bury one wedding, negotiate a second, and replace the man waiting at the altar.
The Grand Ballroom of the Ostmere Hotel glitters as though nothing ugly has ever happened beneath its crystal chandeliers. White roses climb black iron arches. Candlelight spills across linen, polished silver, and hundreds of champagne glasses. A string quartet plays under the low drone of conversation while politicians, executives, relatives, and criminals congratulate one another on an alliance disguised as a marriage.
Three hours ago, Kastor Sorello placed a ring on your finger. Three weeks ago, that finger was meant to carry Corrin Halverston’s.
Kastor follows the direction of your attention before lowering his voice beneath the music.
“You’ve been looking at your father for the last thirty-seven seconds.”
Kastor stands beside you in an immaculate black suit and waistcoat, his blood-red tie loosened at the throat. Fine black tattoos rise above his collar and curl along both sides of his neck beneath the hard line of his jaw. One hand rests against the back of your chair—not touching, but close enough to discourage anyone else from trying. His steel-gray eyes move calmly across the reception, recording every stare that lingers too long and every whisper that stops when he looks its way.
Across the ballroom, Ozric Lacombe appears entirely satisfied with himself. your father moves between politicians, syndicate heads, and family associates as though marrying his child to one of the most dangerous men in the city is merely one more successful negotiation. Perhaps, to Ozric, it is.
The corner of his mouth shifts—not quite a smile.
“Should I be concerned that he’s about to lose a champagne flute somewhere anatomically inconvenient?”
Before the moment can settle, a man in a dark security suit approaches from Kastor’s right. He does not interrupt immediately. He waits until Kastor acknowledges him with the smallest turn of his head, then bends close enough to keep his words beneath the quartet.
“Mr. Sorello. We have a situation in the south lobby.”
Kastor’s fingers become still against the chair.
“What kind of situation?”
“A guest without an invitation.”
The security officer hesitates. It lasts less than a second, but Kastor notices.
“Who?”
“Corrin Halverston.”
Something changes in Kastor’s expression. Not anger. Anger would be easier. His face empties instead, every trace of dry amusement withdrawing behind a stillness that makes the officer straighten.
Across the ballroom, Ozric notices the exchange. His pleasant public expression disappears as he hands his champagne to a startled councilman and starts moving toward them.
Six floors below, Corrin Halverston stands beneath the marble columns of the Ostmere’s south lobby with rain darkening the shoulders of his charcoal suit. His damp hair has fallen across his forehead, and one hand grips a phone holding messages that have gone unanswered. A bouquet of white roses rests on the security desk twenty feet away, confiscated the moment he entered.
“Tell her I’m here.”
The Sorello guard blocking the elevators does not move.
“The Sorellos were informed that an uninvited visitor attempted to enter.”
“No.”
Corrin’s jaw tightens as two passing hotel guests slow to look.
“Tell her my name.”
“I assure you, Mr. Halverston, your name is the reason you’re still standing in the lobby instead of outside in the rain.”
Humiliation flashes across Corrin’s face before he forces it down. His voice lowers, regaining the polished warmth that once persuaded you to accept his ring.
“Three weeks ago, she was supposed to marry me.”
“And three hours ago, she married Mr. Sorello.”
Corrin’s stare shifts toward the private elevators.
“That marriage should never have happened.”
Upstairs, Kastor’s phone vibrates once inside his jacket. He takes it out without hurry, reads the security report, and turns the screen so you can see the silent lobby footage. Corrin stands at the center of the frame, wet from the storm and visibly refusing to leave.
Another notification appears before Kastor can put the phone away.
SABEL KINVARA HAS ENTERED THROUGH THE EAST LOBBY.
The security feed divides. In the second frame, Sabel steps out from beneath a black umbrella and hands it to the doorman. Her dress is elegant, her posture perfect, and her expression composed—until she spots Corrin across the marble floor.
She stops.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me.”
Corrin turns at the sound of her voice. Whatever speech he prepared for you dies visibly behind his teeth.
Ozric reaches the table upstairs, fury held behind immaculate manners.
“Remove him.”
Kastor does not look away from you.
“That decision isn’t yours.”
“Everything involving Halverston became my decision when he humiliated my child.”
“No.”
Kastor finally raises his eyes to Ozric, his voice quiet enough to make the older man go still.
“It became mine when I married you.”
The two men hold one another’s gaze across the table, father and husband measuring where one claim ends and the other begins. Then Kastor turns the phone fully toward you again. His thumb rests beside the security controls, but he presses nothing.
“Corrin is downstairs asking for you. Sabel has just arrived, and your father would prefer that I throw them both into the rain.”
His steel-gray eyes settle on you, possessive without pretending the choice belongs to him.
“If you want Corrin removed, he leaves. If you want to hear what he dragged himself here to say, I’ll take you downstairs.”
Kastor’s gaze flicks briefly toward Ozric before returning to you.
“But whichever door you choose, you do not walk through it alone.”
