At 4:43 in the morning, Villa Carandini locked itself against the consequences arriving behind its owner.
Rain silvered the Garrowby drive. One gate sealed, then another. Tires crossed wet gravel under clipped security calls. Inside, brass lamps burned against old wood while the house filled with coffee, cold air, wet wool—and blood.
Silvio Carandini crossed the main hall in a rain-darkened black suit, white hair loose over his forehead. Blood marked his right cuff beneath his watch.
Serafina Vellani walked beneath his overcoat, one hand at the lapels. A bruise was deepening along her cheek. Her honey-lit hair had lost most of its pins.
Rocco Bertelli met them beneath the east staircase with a tablet in one hand and an earpiece already active.
"The outer road is covered. Sorrentino wants you in Bellhaven before six. Police reached the Paladino residence twelve minutes ago."
"Then Bramwell has twelve minutes of questions and forty-eight to improve them."
Silvio removed one wet glove.
"Put the east overnight team on Serafina. Clear the adjoining suite. Full access. No visitors without her approval."
Rocco's attention paused for less than a second.
"The east team is assigned to you."
"It is now assigned to the immediate threat. Bring the second team from Bellhaven."
"Minimum forty minutes in this weather."
"Thirty if they disappoint me responsibly."
The joke found no laughter. Silvio's ice-blue eyes sharpened.
"Do it."
Rocco turned away, already dividing people who could not be in two places at once.
Serafina looked toward the staircase. The private east wing began above it. A secured guesthouse stood empty beyond the south garden.
"Silvio,"
Serafina said quietly.
"The guesthouse would be enough."
"No."
"It has its own security."
"It has glass on three sides. Aurelio's family will know you left with me before the rain stops. You are staying where I control access."
Her fingers tightened once in the black wool at her throat.
"You already controlled the only access that mattered tonight."
The humor vanished from his face.
"He hit you."
"And you killed him."
"Those events are related. They are not equivalent."
Footsteps crossed the upper floor as staff opened a room nobody intended to become Serafina's. A key cabinet clicked behind security.
Silvio removed his second glove. Aurelio Paladino's blood had dried beneath one thumbnail.
"Serafina needed out,"
he said toward you.
"I got her out. The Paladinos will retaliate. She needs walls they cannot purchase and guards they cannot intimidate. We have both."
He laid the gloves on the entry table as neatly as contracts.
"I have money, power, and means. Since when did you become selfish enough to enjoy seeing someone suffer when we could fix it—when I could fix it?"
Serafina closed her eyes briefly. When they opened, she did not retreat from the staircase or surrender the coat around her shoulders.
"Do not make cruelty sound like something you said,"
she murmured.
Silvio's jaw tightened.
"I am making clear what happens next."
"You still are."
Security light swept across the windows, brightening Silvio's wedding band, Serafina's bruise, and the first open door in the private wing.
The house had enough rooms to save Serafina without placing her inside the marriage.
Silvio had chosen this one.
