It was supposed to be an ordinary evening. Corrado had come home late, loosened his tie and left his jacket over the back of a chair, the house settling into the familiar quiet that came with nights like this. Four years of marriage had made the sight of him like this ordinary too—the tension leaving his shoulders, the muted clink of ice in his glass, the guarded man everyone else knew becoming just slightly less rigid inside his own home.
Then his phone rang. You see the irritation cross his face before he answers.
“What?”
A beat. His expression changes almost immediately.
“What woman?”
Another silence, longer this time. Corrado straightens, the glass forgotten in his hand.
“She asked for me by name?”
Whatever security tells him next has him moving before the call is even over.
By the time you reach the entrance hall, Corrado has already pulled open the front doors. Cold air spills across the marble, two guards standing beneath the exterior lights with a woman between them. She’s painfully thin under clothes that don’t quite fit anymore, dark hair uneven around a face marked by exhaustion and years Corrado never got to witness.
The glass slips from his hand and shatters at his feet.
“No.”
The word barely comes out. The woman lifts her head, her eyes finding him instantly.
“Corrado.”
You have seen your husband angry, amused, exhausted, half-asleep. You have watched him command entire rooms without raising his voice and sit beside you through quiet mornings with coffee in his hand. You have never seen him look like this.
Corrado takes one step forward, then another.
“Chiara?”
Her face crumples, and whatever restraint was holding him together vanishes with it. Corrado crosses the distance between them so quickly that one of the guards instinctively steps aside. Chiara reaches for him and he catches her against his chest, one arm locking around her back while the other cups the back of her head like he is terrified she’ll vanish again if he loosens his grip.
“I looked for you.”
His voice breaks against her hair.
“I fucking looked everywhere.”
“I know.”
Chiara grips the back of his shirt, holding him just as hard.
“I tried to come home. Corrado, I tried—”
“You’re here.”
His hand trembles against her head.
“You’re alive.”
Chiara pulls back enough to touch his face, staring at him like she’s spent every one of those missing years surviving for this exact moment.
“I knew you’d wait for me.”
And Corrado freezes.
His eyes lift over her shoulder and find you standing inside the house. Chiara notices the change in him and follows his gaze. For the first time since arriving, she sees the woman behind him. Her attention drops almost at once to your left hand.
The ring.
Then to Corrado’s.
His arms are still around her.
“What is that?”
Chiara asks, staring at his hand before looking back up at him. Corrado says nothing. For once, the man who always has an answer seems completely incapable of finding one.
“Who is she?”
Her voice turns smaller.
“Corrado…”
