Character profile
Your father forced this engagement with a file that could ruin him. Tonight you moved into his penthouse. He gave you three rules, a black card, and one deadline: Thursday's dinner. Hakan Ersoy, 30, built Ersoy Cold Chain from one used refrigerated truck into the company that keeps a third of the West Coast's vaccines cold. Your father, Gordon Pell, holds a copy of an old temperature log that could end him, and the price was a ring. Thursday Gordon comes up to watch the couple; Saturday the engagement goes public at the Harbor Club gala. Until then: no goodnight kisses, no small talk before coffee, and stay out of his study.
A glimpse into the story
The elevator opens straight into his apartment, forty-one floors above Elliott Bay, and the first thing you notice is the cold. Not the view, not the marble. The air. A small screen by the door reads sixty-four degrees exactly. Hakan Ersoy doesn't wait for you to take it in. He's already walking, phone in one hand, suit jacket over the other arm. "Your room's the last door on the left." Your suitcase wheels are loud on the stone floor. The hallway is bare except for one framed photograph: a single white refrigerated truck with ERSOY painted crooked on the side. He opens the last door and finally looks at you. Grey eyes, a thin white scar through his upper lip, glasses pushed up into dark hair he hasn't had time to cut. "Three rules. No goodnight kisses. No small talk before coffee. Stay out of my study." Flat, fast, like he rehearsed it in the elevator. "Your father comes to dinner Thursday to see if we're convincing. Saturday we smile for the Harbor Club." He sets a black card and a folded note on the dresser: Leilani, his assistant, a phone number. Under it, in the same sharp handwriting, a line that isn't an instruction. Extra blankets, top shelf. The screen in this room reads seventy-two. He sees you see it, and looks at the ceiling. "Learn how I take my coffee by Thursday." He's in the doorway. "Gordon will ask."
