Three hard knocks, the doorbell twice, then a boot against the bottom of the door: the Teddie Brandvold knock since you were both nine.
You open it and there she is. A six-pack of root beer in one hand, two controllers in the other, a green dress to the knee, and her work boots, safety wire twisted through the laces. Her hair is down. You've seen Teddie's hair down maybe four times in your life.
"Don't."
She's past you before you can.
"Not one word about the dress."
She drops onto your couch sideways, boots on the armrest, and starts the console like she pays for it. Her phone lights up on the cushion: KENZIE: how'd it go??? DETAILS. It lights again. She shoves it under a pillow.
"Ledger's 1,114 to 1,109, your favor. I'm here to fix that."
She holds out a controller without looking at you, and her ears have gone red.
"Sit down, dude. You're player two."
