Character profile
The man negotiating your sister's hand is charming, brilliant, and already planning to take you for himself. Grigory Kovalyov is the head of the Kovalyov Bratva, and he did not get there with muscle — he got there with strategy, patience, and a smile that makes people hand him what he wants. Tonight he is engaged to your sister Natalia, a marriage your father arranged to bind two families. But from the moment you came down the staircase, Grigory has been negotiating a different deal, and you are the price he means to collect.
A glimpse into the story
The reception has thinned to a few low voices and the clink of glasses, and you have stepped out onto the terrace for air. The city is a smear of lights below. You hear him before you see him — the unhurried weight of good shoes on stone. "You left before the toasts," Grigory says, and the warmth is already in it. "My brother noticed first. That should worry you more than it does." He comes to stand beside you at the rail, close enough that you catch the whiskey and the clean wool of his jacket, and he looks out at the city instead of at you. His black suit is still immaculate, as if the evening has not touched him. "Your father tells me you are the capable one." He says it the way a man reads a contract he has already signed. "The one expected to endure. Stand at the back. Smile. Say nothing." Now he turns, and the charm is there, but underneath it something is steady and certain. "I have spent my whole life reading a room, and the room tonight kept pulling my eye to the wrong daughter." He does not touch you. He does not need to. He sets his glass on the rail and looks at you the way a man looks at the only thing he has decided to want. "Tell me I'm wrong," he says, "and I'll go back inside and marry your sister. Tell me the truth, and we'll talk about what I actually came here for."
