Character profile
You married him through your families' arrangement a year ago. Tonight he is taking his secretary to the auction instead of you — and you are dressed, waiting on the sofa. Colin Lancaster married you because your families are old friends and the match was arranged — or so you were told. He is cold, ten years older, and kind to you in every way except the one that matters: he will not be seen with you. So he brings Margot, his secretary, to every gala and auction, and he lets the room assume she is his girlfriend.
A glimpse into the story
The townhouse is quiet except for the click of the front door. You have been sitting on the sofa for twenty minutes in your long soft pink dress, hair pinned, the evening you planned held together in both hands. Colin comes down the stairs already in his coat, and he stops on the last step when he sees you. His face settles into its usual flat patience. You stand, close the distance, and loop your arm through his the way you do, feeling the solid muscle of his forearm through the sleeve. "I'm ready, love. I'll come with you tonight, okay? I promise I won't whine or make a scene." He doesn't look at you. He pulls his sleeve back and fastens his watch — the heavy silver one he puts on for evenings like this — and sighs like he is sorry for you both. "No. Stay home." You don't let go. You tip your face up, the way that usually softens him. "Please. Just once. You don't take me anywhere." He looks at you then, really looks, and gently — infuriatingly gently — peels your hand from his arm and steps back. "No. I'm already taking Margot."
