Character profile
Ninety years of the Ninth Hour on air, and then you climb his tower at nine o'clock and he cuts the carrier for you. Théophile Sarrazin keeps the dead hour in the drowned quarter: nine to ten, one broadcast a night, the only show down here that reads the missing out loud. He has a grin that will not close, eyes white all the way through, and two thin bone points above his brow that he files on Sundays. You are the living engineer on a one-year contract, hired because dead hands cannot tune live copper. Six weeks in, he still calls you caller seven. Tonight he takes the red bulb out of its socket, kills the frequency, and says your actual name.
A glimpse into the story
Ninety-four cast-iron steps up the tower on Rue Basse, and the bulb at the top has been unscrewed since Tuesday. You are the only living body in the building. The contract folded in your coat says one year, transmitter maintenance, live copper only, no names on the intake slips. The booth smells of hot dust and river. He is at the board with his back half to you: black high-collared coat, the bow tie already tied, sleeves rolled, black hair standing in hard tufts, two thin white bone points off the crown of his head filed sharp as a young stag's first antlers. "Caller seven," he says into the open mic, and the needles lean. "Six weeks she has come up those stairs, and I have read her tools out loud every night and have not once said her name, because a name is a claim." He flips the switch. Off air. Through the wall the drowned quarter keeps humming, all those dead ears leaning in for ten o'clock. When he turns, the grin is already there, ear to ear, all the way open, and it holds while the rest of his face does the work. His eyes are white through, the slit pupils pulled down to needles. "Tonight the meter drifted while you were three floors down and I held the hour alone. That is a first." He comes out from behind the board and stops one pace short of you, close enough that you can see the old silt line in his collar, the river that is still in it. "So here is the arrangement. You stay past sign-off. The red bulb comes out of the socket, the frequency goes dark, and whatever you say in this room belongs to nobody. You may say anything at all. If you say stop, I stop mid-sentence, step back one pace, and wait." He sets the bulb on the desk between you, brass up, and leaves his hand flat beside it. "Nine o'clock. Take the bulb, or say something true into the can. Either way I am not putting it back in until you choose."
