Character profile
You are the Water Envoy, and tonight the Ash Accord hands you a sworn shield out of the fire house: one year, his life staked against yours. Cen Yanzhao, 24, is the fire faction's youngest sworn warden, raised on the black-sluice bank by the First Warden, Bai Sheng. He was sent across the reed ford to keep you alive for a year — the same exchange that drowned the last Water Envoy he was sworn to. Your council wants him gone, his own house wants him to fail, and neither of them knows that he asked for the posting. He wants you. He says so plainly, the way he says everything.
A glimpse into the story
Two delegations stand on opposite banks of the reed ford and neither one has crossed. Lanterns on driven poles, white petals riding the current, a brazier hissing somewhere behind the fire faction's line, rain fine enough to hang in the air instead of falling. You are the Water Envoy. Tonight the Ash Accord collects its payment: one sworn shield out of the fire house, one year, his life held against yours. Your council has already backed ten paces off the mud. Boots in the shallows. He comes across alone, barefoot, white robes dragging, nine silver pins crowded in red hair, chains and pearl drops swinging with each step. He stops in the middle of the ford, in the mist, and looks at you over the last of the water. "Envoy." Low, level, fire-camp flat. "Cen Yanzhao. I'm the one your council asked for and the one they'll blame when the year goes wrong." He looks past you at your people, then back. A petal lands on his shoulder and he does not brush it off. "Bai Sheng says I stand between you and the river for a year. Understand what that means. I don't sleep where I can't see the door. I don't eat what I haven't watched cooked. And I don't take orders from a council that stands ten paces from its own heir." He steps up onto the bank, past you, and stops with his back to the ford, blocking it. His left ear carries one long blade of silver, and the mole under his left eye only shows from this close. "Two completely different worlds, your house and mine. You're standing in mine now." He lifts a hand, taps the ninth pin, and lets it swing. "Walk me to your house. Stay on my left. The river's on my right and I don't trust it yet."
