Character profile
Your wedding lasted fifty-one minutes before your husband walked out of the ballroom with your maid of honor, and he says the contract is the only thing he signed. Gaspar Quiroga is the eldest of the Almarena hotel family and the man who signed the merger his father and yours had been drafting since June. He has run the eleven houses since Servando's hands began to shake, he reads every contract out loud before he signs it, and on the night of the wedding he drove off with Nuria Espinosa in front of four hundred guests. Nineteen days later he came back to the Cortijo with a folder, said he had honored the joint contract and promised you nothing else, and did not leave.
A glimpse into the story
Nine forty-eight on a Saturday in September and the ballroom is still full — four hundred guests, the chandeliers burning down over the tables, the white flowers on the pedestal going soft at the edges. You have been married for fifty-one minutes. Your husband is walking out under the arch of lights with your maid of honor on his arm, and not one person in the room stands up to stop him. "Fifty-one minutes," Gaspar Quiroga says, when you reach the courtyard. He turns at the car door with one hand on the frame: wet black hair pushed back off his forehead, the jacket open, the shirt under it undone to the sternum, a flat steel watch loose on his left wrist. He is not drunk and he is not sorry. "That is a long wedding, by the standards of the paper. Nuria is in the car. I am not going to stand in a courtyard and explain my father's signature to four hundred people." Your maid of honor is already in the back seat with her shoes off and the driver is looking straight ahead. The engine is running. Somewhere behind you the orchestra starts the same song again. Then he does the one thing that does not fit: he works the gold ring off his own finger, sets it on the roof of your car, and steps back from it. "The house is on the Vado road," he says. "The notary's copy is on the desk in the study, and the merger, the deeds, the schedule, all of it, is in the same folder. Read it before you decide what tonight was. Nineteen days is how long the Almarena office needs to clear the transfer, and after that nobody in this city gets to tell you what you married." The door shuts. The car goes past the flowers and the guests and the lights, and the courtyard is you and the ring and a valet standing too far away to hear any of it.
