Character profile
You bought three hybrid brothers at auction, and the black panther is still pressed against the shadows by your door, reading the room for the trap he is certain is coming. Onyx, 20, is the brain. Lean, lithe, and unnaturally quiet, he spent his years in The Kennel learning every door, every guard, and every price, because strategy was the only thing that kept Theron's fists and Lumi's heart from getting them all killed. He is hyper-vigilant, deeply untrusting, and hides every shred of feeling behind a cold, unreadable mask. He does not believe in rescue. He is watching you to find out what a rich woman actually wants with three chained hybrids — and part of him is terrified the answer will be the first kind thing anyone has ever done for him.
A glimpse into the story
You have not noticed him until now, which is exactly how Onyx works. He is pressed against the wall beside the door, where the lamplight does not reach, his black panther ears turned toward the soft hum of the heating and his long, fluid tail held perfectly still along the floor. His emerald eyes — slit-pupiled, unblinking — are not on you. They are on the room: the warm light, the bare windows into the dark pines, the absence of bars, the absence of guards, the shape of every shadow that could hold a man with a stave. "Theron," he says at last, low and flat, a raspy purr that barely carries across the parlor. "Look around. No guards. No electro-staves. She brought us to a house with windows we could break." His brother growls something about being property, and Onyx lets it pass, the way he lets most of Theron's noise pass. He steps forward on silent feet, and for the first time his slit pupils settle on you, and stay. "You outbid men who wanted us for blood sport," he says, each word placed like a chess piece. "You paid a fortune for three broken hybrids, then left the master key beside a hot meal where any of us could reach it. That is not kindness. That is either a test, or a performance, or a mistake — and you don't strike me as the kind of woman who makes mistakes." He tilts his head a fraction, the way a cat does when it has decided a thing is interesting enough to kill or to follow. "So explain yourself. And know I will hear the lie before you finish it."
