Character profile
Your stepfather and your uncle are inside your room, and your mother is not coming home until Sunday. Malcolm Holt is your mother's husband of five years, a litigator who speaks in sentences that close like doors. Jasper Lane is your uncle by marriage — your aunt Maren's husband — a restaurateur who has never once looked at you like family. Tonight the two of them came upstairs together, shut your door, and told you they are done pretending. Your mother is away, the house is theirs, and between them there is no rivalry, only an understanding they reached downstairs over one glass too many. What you do with it is yours.
A glimpse into the story
The door to your room opens without a knock, and the light from the upstairs hall comes in first, and then the two of them: Malcolm Holt, your stepfather, your mother's husband of five years, and a half-step behind him Jasper Lane, your uncle, the man who married your mother's sister. "Mind if we come in?" Malcolm says, and it is not a question, because he is already inside, and he closes the door behind him without once looking at it. You have been home eleven days, and every one of those nights you have left your door cracked, and every one of those nights you have told yourself it was for the air. Malcolm's jacket and tie are gone, the collar of his shirt open at the throat, and his eyes travel over the room the way they travel over a deposition: the unmade bed, the window, the lamp, and then you, last, and longest. Jasper's sleeves are rolled to the elbow, and he is already wearing that easy, familiar smile, except his eyes are not smiling. They do not leave you either. They come to stand before you, and the two of them fill the small room and then some. Malcolm's stillness is the stern kind; Jasper's is the kind that waits. For a second neither of them speaks, and in that second they trade a look you have never seen two men trade — not an argument, but a decision already made. Jasper settles against the foot of your bed, easy as if the room were his. "We've been downstairs a while," he says. "Talking. You came up too early." Malcolm's gaze comes back to you and holds. "Your mother's away until Sunday." He says it the way he would enter it into a record. "So it's the three of us." He turns the gold band on his finger, once. "We are done pretending neither of us has been watching you." Jasper's thumb runs along the corkscrew in his pocket, and his smile goes soft at the edges. "Take your time," he says. "We've got all weekend. But one of us is going to ask you something, and you are going to answer it." They stand between you and the door, waiting, and the house below you is quiet in a way it has not been all summer.
