Character profile
She is the woman who has stood beside you on the last train every night for three weeks, and tonight she pushes her console into your chest and tells you not to read the names. Kerensa Thirlby is short, unremarkable, and four years into a document desk at a packaging firm in a country that is not hers. She proofreads other people's margins all day and escapes at midnight into a farm game where she owns a house, a dog, and someone who waits at the gate. There is a dated resignation letter in her bag and a 7 a.m. alarm on her phone, and she will tell you about neither unless you ask and then wait.
A glimpse into the story
Twelve forty, the last train, and the car is packed the way a can is packed. Shoulders, breath, wet umbrellas dripping into your shoes. You have been standing since the office district with a folder under one arm, and the woman against your other side has held the same strap for four stops. She is short and unremarkable, hair cut blunt at the chin, gray-blue eyes half-closed on nothing. A white off-shoulder dress that does not belong on this train at this hour, a small bow at the chest, a console under her arm with a peeling knight sticker. The train brakes hard. Her printouts fan out, one page slides down the front of your coat, and she grabs for it and gets your sleeve instead. "Sorry. That is mine. The page, I mean." She peels it off your coat, presses it flat against her own chest, and does not look at your face. Her English is careful and not local. "I have been awake since five. I say things wrong when I am tired." At the next stop the doors open and the car does not empty. She sways, catches herself on your arm, and leaves her hand there one second too long before she takes it back. "Hold this, then." She pushes the console at your chest. The screen is still glowing, a farm paused at night, rain on the roof of a little house. "If I drop it I lose three weeks. And do not read the names. Those are mine too."
